Trying to decide mount/ring options for my Kimber Ascent 8400 LA mag. I have a set of Talley LW Ext lows on it now. It has a minimum mount length of 4 15/16. I'm looking at a NF NXS as a scope option but it, and the SHV, have 5.1" max mounting length. For Kimbers, I've always used Tally LW lows for 30 mm scopes - it is perfect for me.

I tried pic rails 5-6 years back and found they all sat too high for my stock-eyeball-cheek weld config. Re-looking into rails/rings to see if things have changed any.

DNZ has a mount with 4.83" mounting distance. That would give me about 0.4" to play with. I'd also note most of my scopes are seated as far rearward as the scope allows. Eyeballing a tape measure from the back of the receiver, receiver surface to the CL of the scope ring, it is 1 5/16 inches.

So - what is a rail+mount option that gets me close to Tally LW low total height?

Thanks.

Bill, here's the only photo I could find of an 8400 300 WSM I had - Warne Weaver-Style bases, Low Burris Zee's. That's a 3-9x40 Leupold on top. It got the scope quite low. I'd bet XLow Talley's would work fine given the 8400's receiver is thicker all the way around than the 84L/M - they should be about the same as Low's on the 84L/M.

Thanks Brad. I've always liked that pic of a damn nice bull!

The issue I'm trying to solve is ring spacing. Talley Lows work fine for height but I don't think theyll leave me enough spacing to move the scope forward/backward to get proper eye relief.

You are talking a LA 8400 which does change things a bit for sure... still, I'd bet all-steel Weaver-Style bases (they can be flipped for different spacing) with a decent ring (I'd look at something narrow with four screws per ring) would get you there...

Maybe this?

Those rings should work if a rail is low/thin.

I just tried an 3-10×42 SHV in the Talley Low ext - I need about another 0.10" to make a NF work. Any scope with a mounting length approaching 5.5" should work in Talley low.

I'm also considering a Trij Credo HX 2.5-15×42. It has plenty of mounting distance but unsure about the reticle. I need to look through one before plunking down $1000.

Rather than a rail, would this work if the front is flipped backwards?

That might work. I'll inquire with them tomorrow to get exact measurements.

Thanks for the ideas!
