I have learned that I like it a lot more than having to pump. I have learned that you can make water and do other camp chores at the same time. I have learned that I will be taking my gravity fed water filter more places than my hand pump in the future.

i had one many years ago by basic designs. it was very slow. i expect new filter technology may have improved flow rates. Here's one I think I would try http://www.ula-equipment.com/amigo.htm

I've been looking at gravity feed water filters but the new liteweight pump model from MSR has my attention: MSR Hyperflow Microfilter MtnHtr

I figure it's just like anything else, if I can get someone besides me to do it, life is mo betta.
I like gravity to take care of my hydration needs, as Dean said, it then frees me up to do other stuff, some of it unimportant like other camp chores.
but some things that are danged important too, consulting my map, looking at how pretty the country is and just taking it all in.
ime, if a guy takes care of water first before banging up home and all the other incidentals, you've plenty of water for cooking and drinking.
and when I'm in high country, I don't filter, I just drink it as it comes.

1ak,
It's all subjective like everything else. I do like a pump for hiking in areas with plenty of water resources, I don't have to pack as much water on myself and can pump a water bottle full in a few minutes and be on my way. I'm sure a gravity feed work well too just a different breed of cat is all.

The sweetwater/MSR can be used as a pump or gravity fed with the addition of an extra platty bag and filter link.

I use a ceramic cartridge in a Campmor nylon water bag and get a siphon going. This is much easier than having the cartridge screwed into the bottom of water bag; easy to pull out and clean or switch to another full bag of water. Also, more than one cartridge can be siphoning.

How do you start the siphon? don't know how he does it, but I do it just like siphoning gas, pull on it with my mouth and either let go as the water nears my mouth or spit out the first mouthful. I realize that isn't bulletproof, but don't believe I'm easily got by the nasties. Only had giardia one time and my symptoms were not severe. Doc figures I've built up some degree of immunity cause I've drank so much country water in my life.
