Used Leupold Vari-XII models, or the old M8 series.

For $299 can’t beat a Bushnell Elite 4500 2.5-10, made in S Korea, 4+ inches of eye relief.

I haven't deliberately drop tested a Sightron SI, but I have had good experiences with the 1.75-5's I have. Great little scopes so far. Kenko has a good reputation for making reliable scopes, and I wouldn't hesitate to try the bigger SI if I were looking for what they offer.
The best values I've ever got on optics are the SWFA 6X (also made by Kenko). Paid around $200 for some of them used years back. If you can find one these days, they are still an amazing value, even at several X more than MSRP.

Dixie Rebel: Try to find a used 3x9 Leupold variable scope in matte finish. This WILL serve you well. Sadly "gloss finished" Leupolds are bringing BIG money these days (as they have long been discontinued as a standard offering) and you probably won't find a 3x9 variable Leupold in gloss finish for $250.00 or under anymore. Good luck with your quest. Hold into the wind VarmintGuy

I ordered a Sightron 4x12 from Doug this morning. I have had good luck with Burris too.

I would pick up an older used vx3 by Leupold. They are an excellent unit. IMHO better than the new hd line.

EuroOptic had the Bushnell Engage 4-16x44 with Illuminated reticle (RE4164BF7) It's FFP and illuminated unlike most of the scopes in the Engage line. I put one on a backup 6.5 and have been pleasantly surprised with the glass and tracking. FFP Engage

If you monitor eBay you will occasionally run into a Nikon Monarch UCC 3-9X40 like the one linked here. Make sure it’s the “UCC” version. I have bought three over the past couple years and they are great glass for the money.

I'd say Burris Full Field II with Ballistic Plex reticle is a best buy. $159 on Amazon currently.
