What's your call as regards 270 Winchester?

Re16 - 52.0 gr under a 150 gr AB or Part.

I've not played alot with H1000 in the 270 but plan to this winter. 60 grains will comfortably fit in a resized 270 case with minimal compression.

Good luck getting RL 16, Alliant powder is unavailable anymore. RL 26 was the best in heavy bullet weights but again can't be obtained. I've never need anything more than H4831 in my 270's.

True enough but I have more than a few lbs of Re16 and 26.

For loading .270, I would first try the Re16 with bullets of 130 grains or less. I would expect H1000 to do well with 150s and heavier, buy expectations are often wrong.

I don't load .270 and never have, but I've loaded .280 for quite a while now. I found H1000 to be very good for some 174-grain bullets I picked up. I have not loaded Re16 in .280 Rem...I think it would be the bomb with 120s and okay with 130s and 140s, but that's a nickel's worth of guess.

Have loaded for 15 .270 Winchesters, and the best load found for H1000 was oddly enough with 130-grain Hornady Interlocks in a Ruger No. 1B with a 26" barrel. In that rifle they grouped well under an inch at 3137 fps--with a powder Hodgdon's maximum listed charge of 64.0 grains, which they list at 3025 fps from a 24" barrel.

MD, that's interesting to me. Have you had many loads go that far above the listed maximum charge weight?

I have one 7mm Rem mag load that is 4 grains over book max. It never shows any over pressure signs. I have seen this load in 5 different rifles.
It's a load for 175 grain bullets. It's very accurate too.

Take care.

I don't have a .270, but Reloder 16 works well with 139-140 grain bullets in my .280 Remington so I'd imagine it's also a good powder in the .270.

I've been using RL-16 quite a bit lately, and it seems to work well in a number of other cartridges including 6.5 CM, .30-06 and .300 Win Mag. This is not surprising since its burn rate is similar to H4350.

68 gr of RL22 in a 270 case. I only thought I liked to compress a powder charge.

Actually, I screwed up. The 64.0 grain charge IS Hodgdon's maximum listed charge with 130 Interlocks. I meant to say 4 grains over their starting load of 60 grains.

RL-16 works very well in the 270, as does 6.5 Staball, H4831, RL-19, 22, 26, 17, H4350, IMR-4831, 7828, 4064, MRP and others.

With all those being top notch, I'd never buy H1000 specifically for a 270, & unless I had a big pile of it to use forever, it would never be a preferred powder.

There are a lot of powders on a burn rate chart between RL-16 & H1000 that are much more suitable, IMHO.

YMMV

Yep!

But that's one of the virtues of the .270....

I have found that RL16 works well on .243, 270 win, and .30-06.

You can add the 7-08 & the 280 to that list as well.

With H4831 being very close if not top of the list, with the IMR variant close behind.

It is pretty darned easy to make 3100 in a 270 with a 130, a 22 inch barrel, and H4831. Usually with great accuracy.
