Rufous, prob’ly the most cold-adapted hummingbird, getting so common here and the across the Southeast in winter it’s starting to look like major range expansion, banded birds returning in consecutive winters.

Reports of a male hanging around all summer in Georgia, possibly breeding.

I left my feeders up this year hoping to get one, nothing yet. Several reports from the Hill Country so I’m told.

Maybe it’s an older one that’s going to over winter or knows his limitations.
Cool

I like these stories.I have been watching a Sandhill Crane hanging out with the geese at the local lake. I have seen a few pass through in the spring but never in the winter.

Cool beans Bob,

Odd things this winter, just mentioned in another thread that I saw a pair of mourning doves a week or two back, very odd for this time of year. The lack of any snow to speak of might have kept them from migrating by end of Nov as most do. Wondered if they might have been late fledgelings too.

Nature always throwing curve balls. We have a frog living under the back deck, has been calling even when it's below freezing out there. Porch picks up heat in the afternoon and is right up against the house, so probably a few degrees above under there.

Merry Christmas to you and yours

Our Anna's hummers are resident year round here, the Rufous migrate through. I've done the reading, etc but it still seems a miracle to see them after snow, freezes, a month long rain ..
