I recently pick up a Savage 29 pump 22. The gunsmith I do internet sales for often pays me in old guns, the kicker is they usually have some issue. The issue I was told was it didn't cycle. After cleaning it very well seems to work fine, the first issue is the slide release does not lock when cocked. I'm looking at the straight spring that pushes on the slide release and wondering if it is supposed to sit on top or the bottom of the round knob projection. the spring pressure is when you pull down on the release tab. Im thinking it should be when pushing up. anyone got a model 29 handy to check this out? Thanks

Second issue. When on safe if you pull the trigger it move back a tiny bit and when you take the safety off it will drop the hammer. Thinking the safety spring is weak or the safety selector has a worn flat spot. Any input?

I think you have a 29-A or -B, not a 29, it's a completely different action inside form the later versions. On the later 29-A's & B's the action lock is soft metal and can get damaged or bent if someone tries to force the action open with it locked. As for the safety, try turning the safety button and see if that makes a difference, if it doesn't then I think the issue is with the trigger being worn.

This is from a thread linked to in the "misc-good-info" sticky above, the action lock on the 29-A is in the released position with the hammer down, the round wire spring goes under the pin on it.

I guess I should have been more specific. Yes 29 B
I took the safety out thinking the follower may have been worn. Looked fine and the spring had plenty of tension. The fact the operating release is worn is not a big deal. The safety not holding I guess is more of an issue really, as long as the shooter knows not to rely on it. Still shoots great and functions with short , long and LR.
