Shoot…now I can’t tell if anybody is being serious or not

Anyone care to elaborate?

The rest of the gun appears to be in very good condition but I’ll post some pics in a bit

I’ve seen some examples of what I would consider to be poorly done counterfeits, discussed on the WACA site. People far more experienced than me, accepted them as factory work. It’s just a bit difficult for me to believe that on a gun that is supposed to receive the additional TLC a Super Grade was purported to get, they wouldn’t do a better job of matching the fonts. If those mismatched letters appeared anywhere on the barrel, nobody would consider them legitimate. Just my opinion but I wouldn’t buy a gun stamped like that.

I feel the same way. I’m hoping pocono can help cert on this. I told him the supergrades are supposed to be the cream of the crop. I usually stay away from them though, because so many were faked.

Makes sense to me..thank you for the input

Seems despite the lack of attention to detail it could very well be legit tho?

The gentleman who is considering selling the rifle has been “collecting winchesters a long time” so I have my doubts it’s intentionally faked anyway..

Certifiable: The "floorplate" (only) on that Supergrade appears bogus to me.
I just went and checked all of my Supergrades and NONE of them are anywheres near as "outa'whack" as that one. I would be VERY, VERY doubtful that came from the Winchester factory (as original).

The OP's is a little rougher than the one in the picture. The size of the letters are different as well. I don't know, for sure, but If I was responsible for stamping that, I'd probably throw it in a pile of please don't use these. ..

Did Winchester let one out, looking that bad? It's possible... But the lettering still does not look right.

If you think that's bad, take a look at Model 42 hand-stamped SNs. The guy who bought out the Combs collection has the Alaskan. As a joke he posted a real closeup of the SN. Most of the board thought it was a fake. Knowing the collector's sense of humor I checked Schwing and sure enough there it was.

Boy, the rest of the rifle looks quite nice and I hope Pocono can sort you out cause a 300 H&H Super Grade is one cool rifle.

Page 171 of Rule's book shows three Super Grade floorplates, presumably all legit. Each one reflects some variation in the stamping.

So it seems fair to say there are some fairly rough legitimate floorplates that made it out of the factory..

Ser # on this winchester is 193xxx

What would you guys consider to be a fair price on such a rifle

I am not even going to guess myself, but I'd easily come off 3500 for such a rifle. Probably more though. Super Grades can get weird in prices.

Thanks AK

I would like to own this H&H
Cert, check your pm’s

The SUPER GRADE stamp was probably made with individual characters/die placed in a master holder and then stamped on a supported floor plate that was held in a jig. Obviously, at times the employee who set up the holder didn’t give much thought that all the individual die fonts should be the same. Another thing was that generally Winchester inconsistencies were fairly consistent. If one looks at enough genuine SG plates with these characteristic inconsistencies the aftermarket fakes would seem to be pretty obvious.

Not an excuse for the lack quality control though.

I love that. Now why would I think that one is legit? Everything looks great/symmetrical on that one, even the upside down "A"...

My take on this is I would be more suspect of a perfect looking Super Grade floor plate. I never saw one with perfect font. The G was usually larger on most with the A close second. The dashes pointing out, the dashes pointing in, etc. Some of the hand stamped barrel markings on less popular calibers will raise an eyebrows as well. They were making guns.

I was talking with the seller about this rifle in particular and a few others before they were even listed. We had a fair amount of good communication and he sent several pics I asked for…

I had committed to buying this rifle for an agreed price pending a few more pics.

He stopped communication with me and instead listed it online.

His last text to me was “it sold”

I sent a polite response saying hey buddy I thought we had a deal in the works… (We absolutely did) and he has not responded to me again

Take that for what it’s worth

AK.. I’m not trying to sway anybody, just relating my experience.

It was classic bait and switch, which doesn’t sit well with me and leads to integrity concerns.

Maybe he’s a great guy and I’m all wrong

Supposedly he has many more p64 in 257 Roberts, 220 swift etc..I asked for pictures and never got them..
suffice to say I won’t be pursuing any of his other offers.

I wouldn't buy from that guy. Sounds like a real winner. Probably a good thing you did not buy from him. Doesn't sound real trust worthy, or a man of his word. Saved yourself some headache probably..
