Does anyone know why the factory drilled and tapped holes for mounting a receiver sight on M23 rifles that are not the same size thread? I have many M23 rifles and they all have the forward screw hole a larger size than the rear one. These holes are located on top of the rear receiver ring.

I can't answer your question but I can add some info. The NRA #% rear sight was used from 1919 through 1932. The very first sights only had the one large screw (tal35...what do you have on your erly 19?). This must of had problems because I have not seen may with only the one hole. Sometime 1922 or earlier, the small rear screw was added.
The next sight, NRA #10, was in 1933 with the new model. This was a better sight that used the same holes as the NRA #5.
The next sight was the NRA #15 which was an extension sight. It was the same as the NRA #10 but set back off the rear of the receiver. This required another hole to the rear of the other two.
I'll add to the question. My late 19-33 has two small holes in front of the receiver for a target block. The older 19's had one hole in front of the receiver. How was that hole to be used and with what?
