"7mm-308 .310 neck". Heavy custom stainless barrel on a Sako L579 action.
There was also a gunsmith's name I can't remember, something like Farley? Maybe Kramer?
Is this some old-school stuff, done before the 7mm-08 was standardized? If so, what does the .310 neck refer to?

The diameter of the neck portion of the chamber.
.310 -.284 = .026
.026/2 = .013
A case with .013" thick neck walls would provide zero clearance for a loaded round to chamber. That's actually on the thinner side for neck walls in this class of brass as it is produced. This chamber will require neck turning for proper clearance.

Thank you! It sounds like someone's idea of a dedicated target rifle.
This rifle is part of an estate - I may be helping the family sell several rifles and pistols over the next couple of weeks, including a few .308 cal target rifles built on Rem 700 actions.

I have heard of gunsmiths doing this if customer asks for non-saami chamber. So many people do it these days but factory ammo is tested for saami chambers and if somebody diverging for some reason then factory ammo may run high pressure

Anyone heard of a Kramer or Farley as custom gunsmiths, possibly 20 years ago or so?
