Does anyone know who sells a heavy-wall AR upper? TIA.

Does Larue overbuild their uppers and lowers? I’ve heard that they are a bit heavier but I have no first hand experience.

Maybe look for a nice heavy billet upper. For a heavier forged receiver, look at the VLTOR MUR. Its supposed to be a nice beefed up upper. It may be worth checking out? I know my billet Northtech Defense upper receiver is pretty strong and rigid, but you don't hear anything about Northtech here. Maybe look into the receivers made from 7075-T6 as well. What they are made of, has as much bearing as how they are made, as well.

Aero Precision makes a slightly heavier AR15 upper. They call it an M4E1 upper. It pairs up nicely with their M4E1 lower.

Besides the Vltor Mur, there's Cross Machine Tool & SanTan Tactical.

Mega (now ZEV) used to, but I don't know about the current ZEV versions.

Check with Tony at Tromix. RZ.

I would think that most of the billet machined uppers are going to be a little bit thicker than any of the forged uppers just due to the nature of the manufacturing process. I’d find a billet upper in a design you like.

Someone, forget who, was selling ARs with oversized receivers and BCGs for use with the 6.5 Grendel, and maybe some others. Remington had something similar for their ill-fated .30 AR; ill-fated either because it was ahead of its time or because they didn’t support it with brass that serious shooters wanted.

30 RaR is a pig killing machine though. A shame in a way.

I use Aero precision sets for my heavy MDWS cats.

I’m getting lost here as to why an oversized or heavy receiver is needed. The receiver does not hold any pressure, that’s the barrel extensions job.

Billet is made thicker because it is not as strong as forged but still nothing to do with pressure from the cartridge.

Why is the OP wanting a heavy receiver?

Some people mounting long, heavy barrels want extra stiffness to counteract receiver flex due to barrel weight or floating handguard tension.

The thinnest part of the receiver is the barrel tenon, so that area is usually beefed up.

I won't argue if/how much it helps. I'll leave that to those who play such games.

I could see that if one wants to go that deep.

The idea of going 6.5 Grendel or 30 AR needing a thicker upper is salesmanship at it's finest if anyone is advertising that.

Lotsa people think that a stiffer walled upper makes a difference; I'm still waiting for someone, anyone, anywhere to bring some real test results & meaningful data to show that.

And I'm on enough forums where this has come up enough times to have seen it if it exists.

Not that there is anything wrong with the heavier, stiffer uppers & I use them, but to expect something meaningful & tangible out of that feature is wishful thinking, but if it makes ya feel good, please, have at it...............surely it does not hurt anything.

If only there was a way to add lots of strenght to the upper at the joint.
