If I remember, next time I’m at my other place I can weigh the Alaskan laminate stainless.
That would be great, thanks.
The FN/SC M70 .375 H&H rifles do have a space-wasting infolding of the sheet metal mag box on the sides of box at the rear. But still, my walnut and blue .375 H&H Alaskans take 3-down with room to spare, will take the 4th cartridge about halfway, enough that the feed rails will retain enough to hold it in place until bolt is closed to chamber the 4th round. 3+1 easy, with room to spare.
Sometimes the wrong spring (hump-bottom space waster) gets used instead of the flat-bottom space saver. Monday morning or Friday afternoon parts ? That would turn the easy 3+1 into a difficult magazine loading. Ditto if wrong follower.
The Pre-'64 M70 Alaskan .375 H&H was an easy 4+1 five-shooter. No magazine box sides folded inward at rear of box. Sheet metal box was wider, not deeper.

I tried to weigh mine on a bathroom scale and a bow scale. Neither are accurate. The gun is over 10 pounds with scope and mounts. I remember think it was 9 pounds before the scope was mounted.
ArcherBunker, Thank you for daring to weigh yourself. If that is a 9-pound rifle then the stock must be over 3 pounds !
Or did they make the barrel contour on the stainless slightly heavier to balance a slightly-heavier-than-walnut stock ?
The B&C Medalist stock for that rifle weighs 2 pounds flat, same as the walnut on my 7 lb 10 oz rifle. Note to self: Get Alaskan Cerokoted and B&C-ed.

Another request for sumbuddy who know, one of the lucky 157 owners out there, please measure the diameter of the barrel at the muzzle.
Is the muzzle diameter greater than 0.640" ? Not definitive for a heavier barrel, as the heavier barrel might still taper to same slim 0.640". But still worth knowing.
Better yet, one of you lucky 157 just ship your rifle to me and I will weigh the stock and barreled-action separately on my digital kitchen scales. Cannot promise how soon I will return the rifle.
Heavier stock plus heavier barrel might produce perfect balance on a 9-pound stainless laminate rifle, just like on the walnut and blue rifles weighing just under 7.75 pounds.

Here is that space-wasting inward fold/roll on the sides of the FN/SC M70 rifles:
Here is the old Connecticut Classic Mag box for a .458 WinMag, same as the .375 H&H but with a length-decreasing block at the back, but no width-decreasing folds/rolls:

I unofficially calibrated my bow scale with some dumbbells. I get 10# even with leather sling, scope and mounts. Subtract 16.2oz for the scope, 4oz for mounts and I guess 3oz for the sling. Total 160oz - 16.2oz -4oz -3oz = 136.8oz/16oz = 8.55 pounds.
I would comfortably say the rifle alone weighs closer to 8.5 pounds than 9 pounds.
The barrel muzzle is .636
You sir have caused me to retrieve the rifle from its home and gaze upon it more times in the last two weeks than I have in the last 11 years. Thank you. I just may provide a special place for it now so that I may gaze upon it more often. Only 20 single break-in rounds (then clean) down the tube. Maybe this summer I'll put another 50 break-in rounds down range and then start searching for a group. Now that you have enlightened me on it lineage, I will care for it at the range like a newborn child in a bassinet.
ArcherBunker, Thanks. Even with all your guessing I guess you are closer to the truth than the advertising was.

Big Stick has his Burris X-Treme Tactical rings backwards. The squared-flat recoil stop on the bottom of the ring requires the 1/2" main mounting bolts to be on right side of rifle. But what does one who would destroy one of the 157 care ?

Pictured rings, are certainly not Burris and it's prudent to keep things out of the exhaust port. Now even you "know". Hint.

Dang, he still won't tell what rings he is using ! I was hoping to smoke it out of him. Could they be these?
If the crossbolt is square on both sides, or at least allows nuts on left side of rifle, then they do beat Burris X-Tac. Flat top too is an improvement, though Burris Picatinny tops come at extra cost. 1" inserts in 30mm rings is OK too, for free with every set ! All for a price that beats Burris. Cheap ! I have a new favorite ring, even if it is made in China like Burris.

Yippee. Cheap is good again. Finally got something worthwhile out of him. Little bit of a variant ring on the SWFA scope with the green tape wraps ... I just regret that I cannot unsee the butchery of #157. Only 156 left.

The laminate stock is a tank. For the classic stainless with its truck axle; the stock is ~33 oz, yielding roughly 6 1/2 pounds for everything else. The stainless laminate has a much lighter contour but makes up the difference in the stock. I’ll try to weigh mine at some point but I’m certain it’s over 40 oz.

Thanks in advance AKwolverine. Take care of that rifle. There are only 156 of them left, or less, depending on how many have been destroyed.
