Apparently, organized crime is causing an uproar in Ecuador. A convicted murderer was being transferred to a maximum security prison, and he took the opportunity to escape, possibly with the help of corrupt guards.

Members of his gang, Albanian and Mexican, are on a rampage in the country. They seized a television station and attempted to broadcast from there. People are staying home, and the President of the country is vowing a crackdown on organized crime.

Last spring, the outgoing President did something interesting: He substantially loosened their gun control laws by allowing private citizens to carry firearms in public. That's kind of the opposite of what you might expect.

Ecuador used to be pretty peaceful, or it was when I was there 30 years ago. Apparently times have changed. Lots of Marxists in power in South America these days.

A friend was in Ecuador over Christmas for a week and didn’t mention any of this stuff. Having said that, she was with a tour group in an off-the-grid adventure, so really no internet connection except for the night she arrived and the night before she left.

The military and police have been very active overnight. 70 gang members are in custody, and hostages have been rescued. Situation settling down, and life is returning to normal.

329 gangsters arrested, 5 killed, 200 stolen cars recovered, 28 of the escaped inmates recaptured. Nearly 100 guards are being held hostage in various prisons, and the government absolutely refuses to negotiate with the hostage takers.

My youngest son is a pastor and has made several trips to Ecuador to teach pastors. There was always a danger of being kidnapped and held for ransom. He has also made trips to Nirobi Africa. When he returned , told his mother they stayed at a “safe” hotel that had armed security. Then revealed they walked several blocks unescorted to a black pastor’s church for a larger training room.
