I’ve killed a lot of wolves over the last 50 years here on Lake Nipigon between snaring and shooting. One year I got 13. I’m gettin old and feeble so I set up a bait pile on the ice in the front yard and shoot off the front deck at 100 meters. Generally get 2 a year that way —got 2 last year with a 17hmr. I think that might be a little lite but hit thru the heart and lungs they don’t go far. Have killed several with a .22Mag. I have a buddy with a 22-250 and he can shoot—he drop them in their tracks out over 300 meters. Biggest I ever killed weighed 136# but prolly only a handful over 100#. Lots of yearlings here won’t go much over 50#. Price of liscense here gonna run prolly $500 all in so the govt makin more than the outfitter.

Never killed a wolf. But having taken tons of hogs and coyotes with a .223, I’d think any varmint caliber would suffice. As well as any deer hunting caliber. JMHO. For whatever it’s worth.

Before I went Wolf hunting I thought, it’s no big deal it’s like shooting a dog. The Outfitter told me it’s not like shooting a dog and they will carry a lot of lead if you don’t hit them right. He was right, I was wrong. There is a world of difference between a German Shepherd and the Wolf I have at home that is a killing machine.

I could see shooting a 75 lb Wolf with a .22-250 and 60 Gr. Nosler Partition over bait, but if you are cutting tracks and the Wolf will be running and the shots go longer or the Wolf is a lot bigger than 75 lbs., I think the Outfitter was also right and a Deer rifle Caliber is a much better choice.

No one could pick it up to do the standard Wolf hugging pose. It took 2 strong guys to lift it.

Nice work on the Wolves! I just dont put in the time to specifically hunt them, but I am in the bush almost everyday so its about opportunity.

I have seen maybe 20 of them since I first saw them locally, which is about 15-20 years.

I have had them howling around me in the thick bush on two occasions, but I never saw them, at maybe 30-50yds

I missed one at 200 yds while he was moving, and hit another at 200yds, flipped him upside down then he swam across a small pond and I never recovered it, he was hit hard, looked all day and never found it, both black.

Alrighty then. I didn't happen to see a scale in the video of that very-live wolf but I'll bet the farm that wolf doesn't top 120 lbs.

If you do happen to talk to Byron, be sure to tell him you're hoping for a 180lb wolf (and that you've already taken one that size) and maybe report his comments back here if you don't mind.

There was no scale for my Wolf either, just repeating what I was told. If my Wolf was 120 lbs I would have been able to lift it for the standard Wolf hugging photo op pic.

That wolf isn't over 125 TOPS.
