My brother just ordered a Leopold VX-II 6X-18X AO yesterday and the price went from $429.00 to $479.00. That is a 2008 price increase of almost 10%. Whats up with that???

Doc The price of metal. Even beer cans are selling for around 60 cents a pound to the recyclers. Thank China for that.

I don't mind paying an extra 60 centavos. I wouldn't even expect a whole pound's worth of metal.
I believe it may have to do with the falling dollar.

I'm guessing the price of fule, energy, labor, etc is driving the cost. The price of the raw material is negligible.

No I think you are wrong. The price of all metals is going nutz. Not only going nutz but some types are getting scarce.I make Custom Knives and the price increase for materials can be up to $35.00 per knife depending on what kind of steel and other materials are required.
Its all right to be white!! Stupidity left unattended will run rampant Don't argue with stupid people, They will drag you down to their level and then win by experience

I work for a major aluminum extruder. We use millions of pounds every year and are very tuned into the market. There has not been much upward pressure in aluminum pricing during the last year. I doubt inflation in the metal market can amount to over a buck.
The problem is not the aluminum pricing.

We all know that the imported scopes are "HAVING" to take some significant price increases due to the U.S. dollar devaluation.
This could lead to "profit" taking by some U.S. manufacturers raising prices to follow the new import scope price increases.

You're right but there are some good buys. I purchased the Bushnell 3200 @$119 that was discussed here as a back up scope. While unmounted it does appear to be more than adequate for standard calibers. Also, the Pentax that Doug sells is reported to be very adequate at well under $100.

In Canada Leupolds are going down due to the falling American dollar, or rather it's previous drop since it is holding its own now. I'm enjoying the drop in American optics, African safaris etc.
