I’m curious about barrel weights on a couple of my 99’s. I should be able to figure it out with the reference books but it doesn’t take much to confuse my old addled brain.

I have a 1965 99 DL in 284 that has a 22” medium weight barrel. I expected it would have a light barrel like other calibers but without sight boss which wasn’t required due to smaller bore. Did all 284 DL’s have medium barrels?

I have a 1985 model C with a lightweight barrel but I thought the C barrels went to medium well before 1985.

I think all .284's were medium weight.

What is the alfa in the serial of your Model C? The C's went to medium around 1970. Pictures or details of what your C looks like would be helpful. If you have Rory's Blue Book matching it to one of the C Styles would be good. Any modifications done to the rifle?

The serial number of the 99C is E494xxx. It matches style 9 in Rory’s book. Dimension at the muzzle is approx .575”. I don’t know about previous modifications. The barrel to stock fit looks normal.

By lightweight do you mean that it has a rear sight barrel boss? Or just the barrel is thinner? I have a 99C with serial E787xxx, and I didn't notice the barrel was lightweight.

.

My C doesn’t have a barrel boss, it has a sliding ramp Williams and it’s thinner at the muzzle than my 284DL and same as my pre mil F (.575 for C&F, .625 for DL 284)

The F is thinner than the C towards the breech.

Maybe my C and DL are different versions of medium.

Yeah, I think the 284 barrels might have been unique barrel profiles. Never compared mine to other middle weight barrels of the time.

That helps a lot, thanks for taking all those measurements. To me it reinforces what Rory suggested about the 284 being a unique barrel profile.
