I know the Nylon has a date code on the barrel and this looks like LE 86

L = Feb
E = 1958

86 = the inspector number

But what is confusing me is supposedly there were no serial numbers before 1967

The metal action housing has a serial number A22979**

Serial numbers were not required by Federal law prior to 1968, that does not mean that they weren't used.

5Redman8: Seeings the Remington Model 66's were not produced until 1959 I would contend that the Rifle pictured was made in February of 1984 (as per the "LE" barrel code)!
Kind of wish I had one of the several Model 66's back that I owned in the past.
They were kind of cool and functioned pretty well.

I agree, the A prefix serial number indicates that it was made later in the production run. My most recent Nylon 66 was assembled in 06/72, SN 22669xx, purchased on this site in 07/08.

Not too long ago you could buy the Brazilian CBC/FIE GR8 clone for under $200, sometimes even a lot less.
