A local shop has a Rem 582 in decent shape for $229. That seems like an ok deal. I'm tempted to pick it up. I had one for a day as a kid but it had feeding issues so I returned it. It shot well so I think I'll take a chance on this one for $229.

Cheap enough these days I had the mag fed version I sold on here a few weeks ago. They shoot well

At that price you should jump on it. I haved owned quite a few of the 580 series and they all performed way above their price point. All they needed was a trigger modification to get them down to a decent pull weight.
Gopher season is coming quickly and it would be a great little rifle for them.

My kids liked to shoot their Remington 582s and Marlin 981TS because they could load more .22 Shorts than .22 LRs into the magazine. When they were small, they preferred the 582s because the stocks fit them better and later, when they got older/bigger, they preferred the stock fit of the Marlins, so the Remington went on the shelf.
$229 is a good price these days. The last minty 582 that I saw sold for $400 within 2 days of going onto the used gun rack.
