Just finished this pillar bedding up on a nice vintage 788. You can see the counter bored rear pillar for the threaded 'spud' that's silver soldered to the tang for the rear action screw to thread into.

Good shootin' smile -Al

what caliber is that? It has a carbine stock, but the barrel looks too long.

Good stuff Al!

Back when the 788 was popular among silhouette shooters I seem to recall they were doing that. I never got around to it with my 788 before I sold it.

Another rifle I wish I had kept……

It's a 223 and barrel length is 24". It's the standard 788 stock...the pic was from my camera and the proportions can at times seemed skewed.

On 788 stocks, there is no difference in the 'carbine' stocks or standard stocks...all 788 stocks are the same length. In 1980, they changed to a fuller fore arm and bit more fullness in the pistol grip area. The 18.5" barrels came in 1980 for all chamberings except 223 and 22-250 which remained at 24". There was no actual 788 designated as the 'Carbine' model. They have just come to be known as such through the years.

Good shootin' -Al

Looks like you fully floated the barrel? Do you see much difference in accuracy versus bedding a couple inches under the chamber? I know that on my rifles I will bed the first two inches of the barrel on a sporter weight, but all my 28-30" LR/Palma barrels are floating from the action face forward. Works for me, but I've only worked with a limited number of rifles.
