A few years ago I purchased what was advertised as a sporterized M48 in 7-08. It is chambered in 7-08. However I noticed when I recently pulled the stock off of it, it's a M98 stock. The measurements are closer to a 98, but slightly off. Or perhaps I'm just not getting a good measurement.
Thanks. That was what I was thinking but knew the experts could verify.
Well at least it had a good scope on it.
What type of pressure is this action good for? With this originally being an 8x57 I'm seeing things from 35k to 56k. If I remember correctly this was because of saami keeping it low due to the potential two 8x57 bore diameters.
It was made in Turkey, at Kirikkale Tufek Fabrikast. Turkey was not a participant in WWII, so it wasn't subject to wartime shortcuts. It was made long after .323 had been standardised. The Turks loaded their ammunition to the same specs as the Germans (S-patronen).
The large ring small shank configuration also gives the receiver ring rather more thickness than is standard for an M98.
Then it should be ok to stay as the 7-08 that it's currently chambered as.
It's one of my remote auction purchases.. The way it was stocked, it looked like one of those sporterized M48s, and was advertised as a M48, that was imported, rebarreled and put in a Butler Creek stock that hit the market a couple(+) decades ago.
I can't tell if the date stamp is 1942 or 1947 for the 2 or 7 is faint. I guess I'll try a pencil rub to see if I can get a better idea. The old girl is a bit rough in a few spots, but not too bad and should clean up well and be a perfectly serviceable hunting rifle for deer with 120 grain bullets.
Is the bolt the same as a 98 or is it a variant of its own? Someone got a bit aggressive on shaping the bolt handle and I think it would just be better to replace the bolt in entirely and re head space it.

If I were in that position I'd just get my gunsmith to remove the old handle and replace it with one of your choosing. That way if headspace is already OK you wouldn't need to mess with that. Just something to think about PJ
Our forefathers did not politely protest the British. They did not vote them out of office, nor did they impeach the king, march on the capitol or ask permission for their rights. ----------------They just shot them. MOLON LABE
I'll talk with Rudy about that. Concern is that they got overly aggressive taking off the serial number and took too much off the stem/bolt connection and affected the caming action of the lever. The initial smith said it was ok and locks up well, but would most likely be easier to start with a new bolt to make it pretty.
I guess I need to quit purchasing bargains out of auctions!

It'd be easier and cheaper to saw the handle off and weld on a new one.
