Never saw the Richard Chamberlin version. The more recent one with Jim Cavaizel was pretty good, IMO.

Should probably make more time to read books…..

I read the book many years ago. I don't remember the details but in many places it was quite different from any of the movie versions. Any time you read on screen "Based on..." you know they've butchered a good book. Dumas was a black man who also wrote The Three Musketeers. There's another hatchet job. It's been speculated that at least 1 and maybe more of the 3 were black but Dumas didn't say that. He just portrayed them as excellent swordsmen and devoted soldiers.

I have to agree with you on movies versus books. Only a few movies I have seen did the books justice.
I don’t know if there’s a previous made movie about this book. Like I said, it wouldn’t have entered my radar had a friend not recommended it first.
And the only remake of any movie I ever liked was Thomas Crown Affair.
Love McQueen and Faye Dunaway, but the original plot was hard to follow, I thought. Not a fan of bare tits and graphic sex scenes, (at least not on a screen😀) but the remake is easier to watch and understand.

A quick google shows at least 12 movies titled 'Count of Monte Cristo' and at least a dozen more based on it, like 'Monte Cristo', 'Treasure of MC', 'Wife of MC', and on and on. The earliest movie I saw listed was in 1912. I didn't know they made movies that far back. I'll bet the computer graphics were superb.

The Jim Caveizel version version is by far the best.

Dumas is one of my favorite classic writer. I've read The Count of Monte Cristo, The Three Musketeers, Twenty Years after & The Man in the Iron Mask.

i really wish a serious film version of The Three Musketeers would have been made.

There is a reason they are classics. This is one of many worth the time investment.

Ha...just went and got a good copy from GalaxyRG. Lo and behold there is a 2024 reproduction of Mr And Mrs Smith...with a black fellow and an asian piece in the lead roles.

Kind of waiting to see how they do on a remake of Mary Poppins.

These are my opinions, feel free to disagree.

His ancestry was Haitian. Nobody can sort out who's black, white, or blue in that mess. Portraits show him more on the black side but they're from the mid-1800's when photography was primitive.

Wife read it last summer on vacation. She's a fast reader. I read it 30 years ago and don't remember a damn thing about it other than it was a page turner. Didn't realize there was a move in 2002.

Saw the versions with Chamberlain and Caveizel. The Caveizel version is much better.

Some say that some of the musketeers were black because Dumas was black and there were a lot of free blacks in France at that time. That's nonsense. He made no mention of anyone's race.
