The wife and I don’t go out to eat that often and less often go out to eat steak. Every steakhouse we’ve ever been to gives you what amounts to a hacksaw to cut your steak with, big heavy knives with thick serrated dull blades.
You order a nice steak, cooked to perfection and then you try to cut it up into manageable bite size pieces but instead of nice clean cuts you end up shredding the meat to what looks like pulled pork. Why the he%% don’t restaurants give you a sharp plain edge knife?
I’ve used my pocketknife a couple times but the wife gives me “the look” so last night while I was butchering my steak I told her that I was going to order a folding steak knife that won’t embarrass her.
After getting home from the steakhouse I did a little research and ended up ordering a folding, stainless, Opinel #8 with the olive handle off of Amazon. The reviews suggests that I’m not the only one that hates restaurant knives and other guys bring their own when going out to eat steaks. My Opinel knife is due to arrive on Monday.
Anybody else do this?

After my accident I've been very critical of the knives that come with my steak. I hate having to saw through a piece of meat. I don't know if it's a safety issue or something bit it's very rare to get a good knife that comes out with your steak so I started carrying crkt decent knives, good price, and they don't look terribly out of place in a nice restaurant.

There are hordes of thieves in society .
30 years ago I had a part-time job in a Biloxi casino - employees were stealing the cheap silverware. When I heard that I had a hard time believing it. Nice Steak Knives would get stolen- daily.

I bring my own and use various Opinels depending on what I think I might order. Mostly use #10 and #8 acid etched carbon steel but recently got a #7 stainless that was used this week. My brother started giving me crap like he always does when I get my knife out but he was begging to use it soon after. Sucks to be him.

I bring an elegant little KAI 5700. The steak house knives are despicable. They shouldn't even be called knives.

We have steakhouses here in Charleston with sharp knives, most notably Halls Chophouse; also the front of the house staff are full time professionals, not part time college kids. Last steak I had there was about a hundred bucks and worth every cent. We don’t go there too often these days.

True story, I took the family out to one of the best steak places nearby for a son's birthday, Del Frisco's. So there were five of us, the boys were all teenagers and I was obviously the one who was gonna pay the bill. Well, the waiter was high or something, he goes around the table, takes my wife's order, then takes the three boy's orders, then turns on his heel and walks back to the kitchen, forgot to take my order. All the boys start laughing, they couldn't believe it.
He finally figures it out, apologizes, and says he'll make up for it. I figured, great, a free desert or something. But no, he goes on and on about how everybody loves their steak knives---big old serrated blade, and hard plastic handle made to look like wood. He says he'll give us a set, and comes back with a brown paper bag full of steak knives, with the bag stapled shut. We get home, and my wife opens the bag and starts laughing. The knives were all beat to hell, with gouges and cracks in the plastic handles, and dull as butter knives. We just threw 'em in the trash, and haven't been back there since.
A wise man is frequently humbled.

You want one with a 3.5" to 4" blade. Shorter than that and you have to hold it too vertically, and longer gets you strange looks from staff or other customers. Consider tucking a snack size Ziplok bag in your pocket to hold the dirty knife until you get home to clean it.

I'll use whatever knife they give me.. I'm a total stickler for maintaining a razor edge on my carry knife, and there's no way I'd cut anything with a glass plate under it.Now if they brought my steak on a wooden cutting board, I'd use my knife in a minute! But the quickest way to dull a knife is to run the edge up against glass or something similar, like a tooth, or even a hard bone. Yeah, I grew up in my family's meat packing plant, so I still remember cussing when I'd hit a tooth on the kill floor.

Houser I had almost the same experience about two years age but got the Opinel No 10 folding filet knife with olive handles. Slim little thing in the pocket with a long enough blade. Easier to bring and not need than go without. Rocky that’s the same knife I got last year from my wife to wear with “nice jeans”. She wasn’t a fan of my new benchmade tagged out with the orange handles.

Count me among the disgusted, not just for meat but for anything else on the plate that needs hacked up. I carry the six dollar walmart folding knife for restaurant use and if the waitstaff carries it off with the dishes while I'm distracted it's no great loss.
That happened in October last year when the wife and a sister-in-law were complaining about something they ordered and I didn't notice the knife was gone till I went to put it in my pocket the next morning. Oh well.
At Christmas last year walmart had a 7 pack of bubble wrap folders for 25 bucks. I'm set for disposable knives for awhile.

It’s ok as long as I can keep meat under my cut, once the steak gets small you have to put pieces under the chunk. Most of the time their knives suffice. The ultimate Campfire solution to the problem:
Only visit the most expensive steakhouse. Take only steak from an animal that you have raised, butchered, and aged yourself.. (It probably would be best if you had sired the critter yourself, but that may be just a bit much.) Do not allow anyone else to prepare your steak; demand to be allowed to utilize their kitchen to do it yourself. Take along your own knife that you have created, starting with mining the ore. Take along your complete sharpening outfit in case you accidentally touch something with the blade other than the steak itself. Take along your personal wooden platter, made from a tree that you raised from a seed that you put into the ground. Tip lavishly.

In higher end restaurants, the steak knives are plain edge. It makes for a more enjoyable dining experience slicing through the meat. You are expected ta lift the fork at the end of the slice, and bring the meat slightly off the plate to prevent dulling the knife.

Thanks for the thread. It is really hard to find gifts for my Son in Law. I have to be very creative to find something he needs, but does not know he needs. Because if he even suspects he might need it, he has already bought it.
He really like the steakhouses. And he is not bashful. He would have no issue pulling out a folder to slice his steak.

I have been carrying Gerber knives for thirty years with extreme satisfaction. They hold an edge well, but still are easy to touch up on the kitchen hone. At 3.6 inches this one should do the job. https://www.amazon.com/Gerber-Gear-Affinity-Folding-Pocket/dp/B09JHBNGKR/ref=sr_1_29?keywords=gerber%2BKnives&qid=1707114798&s=power-hand-tools&sr=1-29&th=1

Yep, especially cutting up stuff on a ceramic plate. In higher end restaurants, the steak knives are plain edge. It makes for a more enjoyable dining experience slicing through the meat. You are expected ta lift the fork at the end of the slice, and bring the meat slightly off the plate to prevent dulling the knife. How are the desert coffees at the higher end steakhouses you patronize?

Maybe try eating a steak somewhere other than Outback? Didn’t need a knife for the last two Victoria’s Filets I had at Outback I don't eat fillet. Or at Outback. Full tang Dago meat chopper. Damn bro, a good vet could bring that piece of meat back to life!

🤣🤣🤣 Not far off bud...👌

I’ve never experienced the problem the OP writes about. Every steak I have ever ordered, ever in my entire life, from Western Sizzlin to Ruth’s Chris, came with a knife that would cut the steak.

Bingo.

The KAI has been mentioned quite a bit The Shun is pretty much identical but it is crafted in Japan I have one and it’s a wonderful gift At this time the Shin site has a great deal 69.95 https://shun.kaiusa.com/higo-no-kami.htmlIt gets it very close (in price)to the KAI Hank

It's a 'lifetime' ban. If I knew then, what I know now, I'da brought my own extra napkins instead of my own steak knife. They tend to get a little pissy when they catch ya wiping your greasy hands and blowing your nose on the tablecloth. If they didn't furnish those dainty little useless things, and gave out diaper sized napkins all this could have been avoided, and I'd still be allowed out in public.....

When I do eat steak out...which ain't often....I got a knife that's hung on my britches that's razor sharp and cutting steak ain't a problem! But most men don't even tote a knife these days so let 'em use a hacksaw!!

I never only have one knife in my pocket or on my belt, used whichever was handy to cut my steak more than once lol.
If I were so worried about not being able to cut a steak without irreparably damaging it because it was on a hard plate I'd reconsider a lot of things in my my life.

Interesting that a forum that believes you should be able to sharpen a knife with stones by the age of 4 is also concerned about dulling a knife on Outback steak.

I don't remember how many layers, but it wasn't many. This was a 15n20/1095 simple Damascus I'd made to give to a friend to to compliment the carving set I'd made for him. I [bleep] it up and was a separation thus not worth giving or selling. So I decided to use it for the hell of it. It's all I use for a multitude of kitchen stuff, cutting steak or pork chops, or slicing butter (can get it thin as fûck with a thin blade, who knew?). A couple swipes on the steel once in a while is all it needs. Screw the serrated steak knives.

Terrible.
I have been given dirty looks for all the cow shìt under a table when I leave. We were asked to leave an Applebee's once. Working on a job for a farm co-op that had buried a bunch of pesticide-treated seed corn. They were building something on-site and needed it dug up, tested, and hauled to the landfill. It had been buried long enough to turn sour, but not long enough to completely rot, smelled just like vomit and we were walking around in that stuff all morning. Turns out it was one of those smells that you get used to and don't smell any more after a couple hours, but the other customers in the restaurant sure could. The tip-ff was when a few ladies were brought to the booth next to us to be seated and started looking at the bench seats and floor and asking "somebody throw up in here?" LOL!!

I was told we not smell like perfume. I told her, we did not make our living with perfume.

This post is ironic. I read it yesterday and yesterday my local Sportsmans club had its annual meeting members only so they serve prime rib as I got my prime rib. I seen the basket of garage sale, plastic handle steak knives. I assure you the majority guys are like those on the fire, pull out a buck 110 or some folding knife in their pocket, and eat their prime

If I was dining in any state east of the Mississippi or on the left coast, I'd be pretty careful about pulling a knife even in a restaurant. Hate to end up in the hoosegow for a concealed weapons violation.

Doesn't outback use beer to soak steaks? Wonder if it's Bud Light?

Hate to end up in the hoosegow for a concealed weapons violation. You wouldn’t have much trouble in Georgia. A few places in Atlanta maybe, but I’ve used my pocket knife many times and never even got a cross look.

My 30+ year old Leatherman has done a ton of steaks. At home I have two 6-knife sets by Chicago Cutlery. Not serrated. Steak knives.

If nothing else it's a good excuse to purchase a new pocket knife
You've got to hand it to a blind prostitute
