The Mrs may loose a foot or at least a few toes so getting in and out of a conventional shower/tub may be to hard for her. I read reviews on a walk in tub and didn't like what a lot of them had to say and think a walk in shower may be a better option. If I go middle of the road on quality, what should I expect to pay? Its an old house so it doesn't have to be fancy.

Don't pinch pennies. Get one custom built and make it at least a foot wider/deeper than you think it needs to be. It looks like I'm going to have to pay to enlarge the walk in shower that looked huge 10 years ago when it was built. Fortunately, there's room to do that, but the cost will be considerable. Stroke recovery is a beeyotch- - - -especially the helpless feeling of watching someone who was once so fiercely independent struggle just to walk and talk!

It's been 10 years since we did it, so today's prices will be different. But you can count on it being a lot less than one of those tubs.
There are a lot of "one day bath" outfits out there. Get several bids.

Look at Onyx shower basins. They have a low entry base.
Doors/curtain cost will be up to how fancy you want to go. We just bought a 48x60 base for about $1200 I believe. Total shower size will end up 48x80sh.
Depending on surround/tile you go with it will be another $2-3k.
Are you able to do any of the work yourself?

I'd call a couple general contractors if you're talking about removing an old tub and building a new walk in tile shower. Costs are regional and everything cost more now thanks to covtards. At least we're all safe from a cold virus and mean Orange man is not in office.
Wait for what someone paid for a shower ten years ago. Wait for it

With a lifetime in construction I will give my 2 cents. After watching this old house, what is done today is they waterproof the entire bath floor with proper slope to the walk in shower drain. This way no curb to trip on. Also when you need someone to help you into the shower, you can get a walker in there to a seat of some sort where you can shower. Start reading and make the best choice for yourself. Good luck! Alan. P.S. no shower door to clean!

I wasn't going bottom of the line but she doesn't need fancy marble and that sort of fancy. Just basic functionality. Easy to get in and out of. Her foot issue isn't going to be a forever issue but it will be a problem getting in and out for several months. Thanks for the information.

I second the Onyx shower bases and surround walls. I have 2 of them I did myself and still look new.

I'm a pretty fair hand at carpentry but a lousy plumber. I may just hire out the job.

Threshold is an issue as mentioned,if it needs to be flush to floor it will add cost. I did one a couple months back for an older couple, remove tub ,new 4pc shower, grab bars ,plus some other plumbing items in bath it was over 6k. Also as mentioned it regional.
Edit to add. I have not heard any good reviews of a walk in tub/shower. Some issues, you have to get in to fill/drain,seals on doors. I have not seen first hand, just reviews

Figure $6Kish if no surprises and modest materials (pan and 3 piece surround, no tile).
Subject to change quickly upon demo.

Ours isn't fancy but has 1 fixed and 1 hand-holdable shower head. Most importantly, it has no lip at the door, but is recessed a bit into the floor for drainage. You will never regret having that done. Price out doors up front, though - they can get salty, but allow for possible handicap access.
Good luck!

Pour some concrete and push some tiles into the wet cement...
You can rent a concrete core drill to set the drain....
Course thing you gotta dig under the concrete to connect it....
