At my hunting camp I have only seen one rabbit in 23 years, and that was 8 years ago. I am confident they don't live anywhere on the 1000 acres I hunt on or the land around me. My land is a good mix of timber, swamps and fields. Very diverse northeast, PA woods.

My question is: If rabbits do not live on my land, will a coyote / fox still come in to a PC-2 or an other rabbit distress call. BTW, my land has plenty of coyotes! Any advice on an appropriate call to use if a rabbit distress call is not. They do respond to my howler, but none have come in, just howled back.

Thank you

I doubt that coyotes -as clever as they are- have the logic to think, "That must be fake, there are no rabbits here." They respond to distress cries, period.

They'll respond to woodpecker distress where there are no woodpeckers, squirrel distress where there are no squirrels, fawn distress at times of the year when there are no fawns and so on.

Squall, squeal and squeak, then sit still. They''l come.

Yes, they will respond to rabbit sounds! We don't have snowshoes, jackrabbits, or prairie dogs, but all those sounds will call foxes and coyotes in my part of VA. I'm not saying you're wrong, but it's hard for me to imagine that there's a 1000 acres in PA without a rabbit on it!!
Good luck!

1D,

I find it hard to believe as well. Some of the older guys at the camp have said some rabbits have lived in some of the fields that border the swamps lands in the past. About 10 years ago or so, I did witness a hunter shoot a rabbit, but haven't seen one since. I have also never seen a rabbit while on the quad at night. No woodchucks either. Plenty of squirrels, chipmunks and the occasional porcupine.

Year in, year out, an aggressive and raspy jackrabbit has called in more coyotes for me than any other sound whether using hand calls or an electronic caller. Like the guys said, they respond to distress sounds because they are hungry or they think someone has invaded their territory. It doesn't make any difference whether you have rabbits or not.

Good Hunting,

Bob

They're an opportunistic predator--they'll come to anything that sounds like it's dying or struggling--no matter what kind of noise it's making.

NO! The minute somebody posts a sensible question, we all have to rush in with fangs bared - even though there ARE no sensible quest...
