Yeah, I don’t get it. I see the boat paddle Rugers selling for crazy money, the one I dealt (a 30-06) with was a total dog and kicked like a rented mule. Using it as a boat paddle was its best function

So, if a person wants to sell some tang safety red pad Ruger 77s - having very slight use and certainly in nicer condition than the description above - all standard sporting cartridges from .243 through .338 - what is their solid market value?

They are worth what they sell for. A lot of guys collect the boat paddles, so they are willing to pay the high prices. A regular ol tanger, like what is in the OP, generally doesn't bring as much. However, I'm seeing less and less of those on the used rifle racks. That could be one of the reasons they are asking the prices they are for them?
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

I remember being at the gun shop and seeing a whole wall full of those Boat Paddle Rugers.... $350 each.... they were a ugly as my buddy's girl friend.... and nobody wanted them...
And now, they are all the craze....
I think $1000 cdn for a 20 y/o rifle is nuts... you can buy a new Hawkeye in wood and stainless for just a few $$ more plus tax...
Well... we have come to the point.... where... the parasites are killing the host. It's only a matter of time now.
They only win.... when they cheat.

Partsman, the Ruger No. 1 in 7x57 didn’t tempt you more. I think that one went for around $1700 CDN. That auction always gets top dollar for their items.

There are scads of better rifles, and nicer rifles, but there’s no telling what drives the collector lust. Consider depression glass, Beanie Babies, and Pokemon cards, just to name a few of the things outside our hobby that have been valued far beyond any intrinsic worth. At least the tangers are solid rifles that serve a purpose, and some were quite handsome to boot, the ULs for instance. Walnut-stocked, shiny blued rifles are getting scarce as well, and those features are a big deal for some, like gloss scopes they want to put on them so they “match”.
What fresh Hell is this?

Barrel Length: 24" Serial: 7036740 Based upon the serial number, the rifle could be worth it to a collector. Than number falls within the range of rare long action “Flatbolt” or even rarer “Hollowbolt” rifles from 1971. They had a Douglas med.wt. 24” sporter contour barrel and, as with all early production M77’s we’re considered the best made of the tang safety series. In addition, a advanced search on Gunbroker of completed auctions shows M77 rifles in .25-06 are commanding prices above $1000 in most cases.

Take the Ruger 10/22 Magnum and S&W 696 for example. When they were still being made you could hardly give them away, but once they were discontinued you could hardly find one for a price anywhere close to MSRP. Consumers are a fickle bunch!

Without a link or pics is it possible it was marked as a 77 when it really could have been a 77V?

I had one in 243 back in the day. It was a decent rifle, but it wasn't and still isn't worth that much.

It seems like more today - gun stores don't really break down price by brand or version of the rifle - unless it's some sort of English Best or p64.
That is - a wood/blue Ruger is going to be about 1k here regardless if it's Tang, MKII or Hawkeye (which I almost never, ever see used or new).

Local shop has a tang safety heavy barrel 77 in 25-06 . Leupold gloss 3-9 . Got some marks in the wood and they're asking $1100. Been there a while

If it was a flat bolt than maybe 1k is reasonable to someone, passed up on Flatbolt at $800 not long a go.

I have a boat paddle 223 and a couple of tang safety rifles.
