News to me, anyone heard about this ? Looks like you can get a $300/$600 tax credit (not deduction) for gun safe, cases, lock boxes etc. Must be purchased through FFL dealer. (Who will be the first fool to call this "back door" gun monitoring ?) They already have CHP holders, Gun sale info. etc. No secrets for gun owners. Don't have to be gun owner to receive credit, just buy a safe. Firearm Safety Device Credit (effective July 1, 2023) You may qualify to claim this credit if:
you purchased one or more firearm safety devices during the year. you purchased these devices from a federally licensed firearms dealer.
What is it?
An income tax credit equal to the cost of the firearm safety device. The maximum credit allowed is $300 ($600 if you file jointly with your spouse and you each submit a separate application), not to exceed your tax liability. Carry forward any unused credit for up to 5 years. Claim the credit on the following taxes administered by Virginia Tax:
individual income tax
This credit is available beginning with tax year 2023. We can only issue $5 million in total firearm safety device credits per year. Credits will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. What types of firearms safety devices qualify for the credit:
safes gun safes gun cases lock boxes any other locking device that is designed to or can be used to store a firearm.
Is there a cap?
Yes. We can issue no more than $5 million in Firearm Safety Device Credits per year. To apply for the credit
Apply electronically for purchases made during 2023 here.
You can only submit one application per year. The purchase must have been made during the same tax year. For example, if you’re applying for the credit for your tax year 2023 return, you must make the purchase between Jan. 1, 2023, and Dec. 31, 2023. Credits will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Save the receipt (electronic or paper) you receive when you purchase your safety device to help complete the application.
You also have the option to submit a paper application through Form FSD. Mailed applications will be processed when they are received. To ensure your completed application is received as soon as possible, we encourage you to submit it online.

Seems like Pork for FFI's what about Locksmiths and Security retailers?

I would guess the majority of gun safes are purchased at or through a sporting goods store, which would have a FFL license.

It is a legit law... LinkGeneral Assembly had been kicking that one for a couple of years. Same with "No sales tax" on hurricane prep some weekend April... I think it is.

Maybe they are trying to figure out just who has them? No way I would go for that. That's about like your Dr. asking if you have guns in your house.

Maybe they are trying to figure out just who has them? Do you have an iphone? A modern TV? They have cameras in ‘em! They could, but they probably aren’t lookin around your house though. That would be so wrong! Our gov would NEVER do that!

I would guess the majority of gun safes are purchased at or through a sporting goods store, which would have a FFL license. Or Home Depot, or the local Farm and Ranch Store, or Amazon, or manufacturer direct sales. I have purchased two light weight and one heavy fire safe. None came from an FFL.
