Have a case of this stuff, picked it up years ago on a group buy. It's nice consistent ammo, a bit greasy with the machine oil the Germans put on it. I ran some over my Garmin chronograph & was disappointed to see 950fps out of a 4" Ruger Mark 2. The CCI mini mags run +1100 fps.

Anyone else use this ammunition?

Had some RWS High Velocity HP ammo back in the late ‘90s. It produced absolutely fantastic precision through this Hart barreled S&W 63 with Tasco 2x scope at 50 yards:

Half inch 5-shot groups were not uncommon, with a few as tight as 3/8”. Unfortunately, there were no camera phones then, with which to conveniently take bragging photos and, before long, that ammo simply became unavailable.

Looks like it’s now available again (or maybe still).

But, I’m not sure there’s actually enough real advantage to that level of precision, in a revolver intended for popping mass quantities of ground squirrels, to justify the $10+ per 50 round box of the currently made stuff, even if it should prove to shoot as well as the old. The relatively inexpensive and commonly available CCI Sub-Sonic HPs seem to do well enough, even with a Burris FastFire3 red dot sight:

Ex, that's a S&W m-63 on the J frame revolver, correct? I've never seen one that had been rebarreled with a heavy target tube.

Picked one up back in the day used for $240, couldn't get it to shoot to my satisfaction so moved it along & went back to my model 18-3. Loved the size of it, very handy little revolver. Mine was the round butt 4" put a set of S&W finger groove combats on it. Wish I had a few pictures of it, was a sweet set up.

Yep. It was a real mess when I got it new in the late ‘70s. Seemed like Stevie Wonder had handled its final quality control inspection. The cylinder face was cut at an angle, such that it very nearly touched the rear of the barrel on one chamber, but showed extremely excessive gap three chambers away. I suppose I coulda sent it back to S&W for warranty correction. However, my answer was to square up the cylinder face by re-cutting it on my lathe, which then necessitated a replacement barrel. A friend donated a discarded 16” stainless steel Hart .22-250 bench rest barrel with a flame eroded leade, but the rest of the bore was perfect. I lathe-turned it into a PPC style barrel, installed it, and marveled at its precision shooting ever since.

It was so effective on jackrabbits and ground squirrels that my shooting buddies at the time started calling it The Death Ray. It even fits in a Bianchi nylon bandolier holster, with protective covering flap, for conveniently carrying it about. That holster can be a bit noisy on the draw, though; unfastening the flap’s snap sounds like a rim shot on a snare drum.

I picked up a case of the stuff a while back when I found it online for a great price. Kicking myself now for not buying more
