I stumbled into collecting Winchesters in the late 80s. The 3rd Winchester i bought was a 405 with gorgeous wood, a Lyman 21, little blueing, and 18 rounds of factory originals that was supposedly used by a famous guide in AK. I "zeroed it" as best i could with 8 rounds and took 10 hunting for elk in the Flattops wilderness. I ended up shooting a 4pt bull at about 40 yards in the neck (wasnt aiming for the neck) and my love/appreciation for the 405 was solidified. And a much younger man (kid really) with said elk...

Well, I've got two, a modern 1895 (case colored) and an Encore, so I guess I qualify as an "aficionado". Both are unblooded however...

Another cool chambering, the mostly unknown 40-72. It is the predecessor of the 405 in the earliest 1895 chambering. Identical, but with a thinner rim thickness so a 405 couldn’t be fired in the 40-72 and blow it up…

My Winchester .405 is one of two big bore rifles that I hunt with and they are both quite effective. One .405 is the Winchester 1895 and the other is a custom set of double rifle barrels in .405. The biggest beast taken so far with the 1895 is the Cape buff shown in the picture to the left.
I also have a Safari proven (ele , multiple cape buff, and leopard) .458 1886 and double rifle. They are also quite effective.

They are responsible for the demise of a couple Blacktail deer each. My Encore is one accurate thumper somebitch too my friends amazement.

I Like the 405 Winchester , but haven't had a rifle chambered in it for many years . I am currently building a Custom #5 Rolling Block in 405 to solve that problem.

I've recently just picked up this unfired collector. I've been hand loading for it and I love shooting the rifle.

The Encore .405 might be the kickingest mofo I own. The other barrel shown (on the gun) is .500 S&W and it's a pussycat by comparison.

Love the 405. I've only shot one doe with mine but it's a buddy's favorite moose gun. We both have Ruger #1's
