Mule Deer do you know if the .323 ballistic tip bullet is still a thick, tough jacket bullet that will penetrate like a partition bullet. I have a custom 8 x 57(new 27" barrel) and a old Mauser that my gun smith cut down to 26" and sporterized with a new crown. In over 62 years of hunting I've never taken any game with a 8 x 57. You mentioned it being tough years ago.

I'm not John, but I do know that bullet has a thick jacket. With Ramshot Big Game, you can get 2750 fps at reasonable pressure. It will penetrate just fine. I have taken a bunch of hogs, whitetail, and 2 elk with this. And this bullet is accurate. No faults with this at all. Charlie

Yep, the 180 8mm is still one of the heavy-jacket Ballistic Tips, and works very similarly to the Partition. And as Charlie stated Big Game is a great powder for it. Its the most accurate combo in my century-old German custom 98.....

Might also mention that one of my good friends, who passed away a couple years ago, also used the 180 BTip in Africa for plains game--in a German break-action single-shot with a .318" "J" bore--by sizing them down. He got fine accuracy and results too....

I use it in my 325 WSM and it is a shooting SOB. While not a ballistic miracle, it is a great hunting bullet. Does all I need it to do from that rifle. I'd almost skip past the 200's and move to the 220's if I wanted more that what that 180 BT does.

Great Charley. My custom Mauser is chambered a bit short. Dummy me had it done that way to seat out the lighter 150gr bullets. How do you do the chambers in you 8 x 57s?

Hi John! A great big thanks to you and Charlie. Your experience is of greath help. I am experienced, however, I do not have the many years in the field nor the access you and Charlie have to the shooting industry. Thanks for all of your hard earned experience shared with me and all of the 24hourcampfire members.
