Weatherby had just come out with the Ultra Light Weight, and I saw one on the rack at the local GI Goe’s (outdoor focused department store). 30-06, right next to another in .270 Win. The -06 was priced at $575, the $270 was $1175. 2002 or so, I believe. I asked to look at the -06, and inquired after the price difference. The clerk told me the .270 was the new Ultra Light Weight but the -06 was just a Mark V.

They look exactly the same. Are you sure it’s not a mistake?

In a demeaning tone he replied no, it’s not.

So I bought the -06. Price tag still in the trigger guard when they scanned the box, beep, $1175.

Paid the $575. Never saw the clerk again.

I have always marveled at the claimed weight of the Pig they shot.

My camp mate and I have each shot one that strained the 300 pound limit of the scale we had at the time. That was over ten years ago. There's one showing up on another club member's cameras that we think will rival those. In our area those are statistical outliers. Most of the hogs around our lease are much smaller than that. 200 pounds is a pretty big one for the most part.

Ok that’s funny

A friend had a gun shop in a little Colorado town. Above his door was a sign that read "More deer and elk have been killed in this store than the state has".

A neophyte said that in Vietnam the problem with the M-16 was the caliber shot so fast that the second bullet would catch the first fired bullet while still in the barrel and the gun would blow up.

No, no. The way I heard it was that the bullet didn’t start dropping until way past 250 yards (as the explanation for a missed deer).
It’s still accelerating at that point…right?

My all-time favorite personal experience:

Preface:
Went to the LGS, Carter's Country outside of Houston. Mr. Carter offers hunting opportunities to his employees on his sizable company lease. This seems to empower his employees to consider themselves experts on guns.

Story:
A customer had purchased a rifle and a scope and was having the optic mounted while he waited. The "empowered" boob, er uh employee, handed the gun to the customer. Before the proud new owner opened his mouth, I saw the scope base was entirely wrong as it was separated from the receiver by, at least, 1/8"! I immediately decided to not meddle. Right away the customer asks, "Why is there a gap under the base? Isn't it supposed to sit flush?" The empowered expert replied, "Oh no. If it sat flush the recoil would shear the base screws right off with the first shot. The gap keeps the screws tensioned which, keeps them tight. Won't ever come loose."

I could barely retain my composure. Upon hearing the explanation from empowered boob, the customer turned to me & with beaming pride said, "Man that guy really knows his (expletive)!"

That was enough for me. I was unable stand in the presence of such knowledge and hit the door.

On my very first day as a manager at a gun counter I overheard one of my employees tell a customer " Elk are usually shot at ranges out to 1500 yards, and for that, you'll need a .30-30!"

Said employee was quickly escorted to the office for my very first " Interview...." grin

He was lucky he still had his lungs when he left, as I so badly wanted to rip them out.

I was an elk guide on a private ranch for years. Always had my old model 70 in a rifle rack in the truck. No matter what I tried the bluing would rub off the barrel where it was in contact with the rifle rack. To keep this from happening I would wrap the barrel for several inches with black electrical tape and remove the tape after hunting season. Works great by the way. Our guests were usually neophytes to guns and hunting and they would often ask why I had tape on my barrel. My standard reply was that I had broken the barrel in half and didn't have time to fix it properly, so I just taped it back together till I get time. Many believed me and I became a legend to future guests as the man with the taped together rifle.

Yes of course. Still accelerating.

I like the one I've been hearing for years, and it's normally about the 7mm Remington mag, that it's too fast to expand on deer

Worked with a guy who claimed he could shoot an elk off hand with his 7mag off hand by holding at the top of its back.

I can see this fairly easily if one knows his rifle.
