I was browsing my local gun shop today and came across a takedown Savage 1895 in 250-3000. Now I know the 1895 was a predecessor to the 1899/99 and not a whole lot of them were made, I've never seen one in person before but have seen 1899's and 99's. I checked the serial number on savagelevers.com and it came back as a 1913 model 99, the barrel is clearly marked "Model 1895 and 250 3000." From what I can find the 250-3000 did not come out until at least 1915. Therefore assuming the serial number data is corrrect and that a rifle made in 1913 is in fact a model 99 not a model 1895 how do we have a barrel marked model 1895 and 250 3000? I would assume that when the model 1899 came out production of the 1895 stopped therefore there shouldn't be any 1895's in 250-3000. I would also assume the whole internet and several reference books I've looked at aren't two decades late on the date that the 250-3000 came out. Any ideas on this one? Regardless of what's going on it's in decent shape with an excellent bore and it's cheap. I'm planning on bringing it home Thursday.

Barrel has been replaced.

There isn't anything 1895 about that gun.

That's what I initially thought. Except that the barrel says model 1895 on it. Everything I read elsewhere only mentions .303 Savage as far as calibers available in an 1895. I have no expectations of it being anything rare and exciting. I just want to know what it is.

There's a whole lot not adding up here. Stop, take a deep breath, and execute a clear close up picture of the roll stamping(s) on the barrel, and post it here. Without seeing it makes it hard to decipher what you're describing.

It would be a lot more interesting if the OP would throw back some Flor De Cana and try again.

There can't be a Model 1895 barrel in 250-3000.. all the 1895's were 30 caliber, and you can't rebore/rechamber a 30 caliber barrel down to 25 caliber.

A faked barrel? Misreading the barrel?

A couple pictures are needed..

There's a whole lot not adding up here because I'm an idiot. In the poorly lit gun shop I read model 1899 as model 1895. I'm still planning on buying the rifle because it's the only affordable takedown .250-3000 I've ever seen and the takedown joint has zero play.

I think the 1895 has a different bolt/ cocking indicator compared to the more modern models.

Check the 250/3000 for a checked trigger….I understand these are the first model.

Yeah it does. I got really excited a while back because I thought I finally found a decent looking Remington 14 in 25. My hopes were quickly squashed once I figured I can't read and it was a 35 😕

I saw one in 25 at a gunshow last weekend.

Seen quite a few 30s and 35s, and a couple in 32, but not 25. It's not one of those rifles I actively search for, but I do keep an eye open when I'm out and about at shops.

Gun shows around here are a basically waste of time unless you're looking for beef jerky, freeze dried food, candied pecans, cheap garbage knives, or grossly overpriced and thoroughly beaten milsurps. I quit going to them quite a few years ago.

Bet that's a dandy handling and shooting 👍 I've only shot 1 model 14, in 30. Barked a bit much for my taste, but I loved how it handled, so a 25 has been one of those back burner rifles since.

This area had no legal rifle deer hunting from 1901-2022, so it's not really overflowing with antique centerfires. Lots of old rimfires and shotguns floating around, but not so many vintage/antique big game rifles.

I actually collected model 14s for a good while and have owned all the calibers. The 30 and 32 were my favorites. I had a 25 Rem but although it was cool, I'm not sure why anybody would hunt with one.

Handy slick little rifles.

They are all gone now.

Low recoil. One lesson I've learned over the years and really taken to heart is that it really doesn't take a whole lot of pop to put a deer down at short range.

Exit hole on last year's... 110gr .308 bullet with a mv ~1980fps. Shot was from about 20 yards.

This "Reply" is in context of content as revolutionary. To discuss an orphan in this Savage Forum, the Remington Models 14 and 141. Entirely as procedurally "Out of order!" But with excuse as in a succeeding Thread to lurk amongst Savages as explanation given.
