OK, trying this after a long layoff. I'm a Hobbyist Knife Maker using stock removal starting some three years ago. The big thing is getting pictures transferred. I use 1095 Carbon steel and choose to do two basic patterns, the Kephart and Nessmuk. I'll try and post my progress and what I have done. I live in South Texas and have been testing my knives in the field on primarily Hogs and Deer.
My first knife was given to a friend on a Game Ranch nearby. He dressed 6 deer and 6 Hogs without resharpening the blade. No chips, breakage or unforeseen mishaps, well one. Hunters at the ranch all wanted one. During that 2020 season I made some 20 knives with no production experience. Big eyeopener on my 1x42 belt grinder and single burner Forge.
My belt grinder died an early unnatural death and I opted for an OBM 2x72 belt grinder. This was a game changer. A friend bought me a Grinding Jig to get some consistency in my bevels. I opted for a 20* edge grind and the Convex shape of the Kephart. Mr. Kephart said something to the affect, "a knife should only have what it needs and nothing extra." My Mantra...... The knife in the picture is a recent Mini-Kephart and a Horizontal Sheath, both my own design. A utility knife with no frills.
