Not a bad route. I've seen several 22-250 pawn shop rifles as knock-around guns, truck guns, or guns to leave propped by the door. The point-and-shoot trajectory can be handy.

My go-to truck gun for many years was a Ruger tang safety M77 in .22-250. In a lapse of judgment I had a friend refinish the stock and touch up the bluing on the barrel. It is nice enough now I kinda hate seeing it bounce around so it stays home more often than not. A lot of fond trapline and hunting memories with that old Ruger.

Sounds like your Winchester is a winner.

Hard to pass on almost any Winchester 70 for $279 unless it was a solid block of rust.

CDNN might still have some NOS Winchester stocks if you decide you'd prefer wood to synthetic.

Mine was a Ruger 77 in 7.62x39, Zytel stock with a Leupold 6x36 (the only used scope I've ever bought, $100) and a Timney trigger. It was go-to when beating about on the ATV on my 200 acre farm (pine trees in GA). I used this rifle as I did not want to drag one of my prized Model 70s about when not actually hunting. The rifle was one of my favorites, super accurate, easy to shoot and simply cool. It ended up sitting in my safe for quite some time and I ended up selling it for about 3x what I paid to a member on the campfire, they were in high demand for a while. Don't know what I'd do with it but sorry I sold it more than about any other rifle I've sold. If I still had it it would have it's 24" barrel chopped down to 18" and threaded for a suppressor.

I have a truck gun, but does this mean I need a scrub gun as well?

Would a Savage Model 11 in 223 work for that?

Never used one myself
Most all the ranchers where I used to go
hunt way south and southwest and west
of here carried/used 22/250 and 222 for
their bolt rifle needs. They didn't have any
trouble with the coyotes and wtails and
javelina getting away.

I'm still using a faux ti 223 ai with a 21" pacnor 3 groove 8 twist. It was basically a stick specd gun nearly 20 years ago. It still shoots 75g amaxs over 8208xbr at just over 3000 fps which seems to do a lot of thCreedmoor.

Going to be switching to the eldms soon as I'm coming to the end of my amax stash. The elds could even be better based on how the 80s do in my other truck gun an 8 twist tikka 22-250 or how the 88s do in my remage 22 creedmoor.

It seems like one of those 3 rifles generally gets to go fir a ride when I'm just varmint hunting or going for a drive. They're all faster twist 22s shooting heavier tipped Hornady. All though a mini howa grendel did a bit of truck duty the past year or two.

$279 for pretty much any Model 70 XTR is a steal.

The money some old 700ADL’s, 77’s and 70’s have been fetching, or at least offered for, has been about laughable.
