Tree cave yes. Lucky for the calf I found him before the coyotes.

Speaking of calf caves we need to get a couple more.

I called a guy about buying some semen once. You could tell as soon as he answered the phone he was HOT about something. He had been crawled down in a gopher hole far enough to grab a newborn calf I guess he could barely reach it. Hands cramping, calf surely wasn't helping.

Found one in a half frozen ditch full of water one time. Carried her home on the front of my saddle and grandma helped me bottle feed her back to health. Swapped her for my first car a few years later. Seemed like a bunch of work back then, but it's a fond memory now.

A few years ago, while checking the cows, I heard a calf balling away from the herd. It was somewhere down next to a deep gully that separates two pastures. I started walking the gully while listening for the calf’s crying.

I got lucky and stumbled onto where water had washed out around a big tree at the gully. Down in the bottom of the washed out hole amongst the trees roots was the baby calf. It couldn’t have been but a few days or a week old. I laid on my belly and finally got a hold of him and pulled him up through the roots and got him out. Luckily he was ok and I got him back to his mama.

Don’t know how long he had been down there but if I hadn’t heard him I never would have known he was missing.
