In the late 80's or early 90's Remington changed the way the magazine caps are locked.

The older guns use a spring-loaded-pin on the barrel ring that mates notches on the rim of the magazine cap.

Newer guns use the magazine spring retainer, which has notches that mate ribs in the interior of the magazine cap.

Early 870 Expresses use the pin on the barrel ring system of the Wingmaster.

Most of the Expresses us the later magazine spring retainer system.

All the barrels will fit, but if you cross systems, the magazine cap will not stay tight.

Supermag (3 1/2") and Special Field don't fit standard 870s or Expresses. My boys and I have ten 870s in 12 ga in everything from a 1955 old timer to the TB, Tc, and CT series plus Expresses. And five extra brrels. All interchange. The cap issue isn't a big deal.

So will a wingmaster slug barrel fit the express Supermag?

3 1/2" Super Mag barrels will fit 2 3/4 or 3" receivers, but you can't use 3 1/2" shells as the action is too short.

2 3/4" and 3" barrels work just fine on 3 1/2" receivers, with of course shells appropriate to the barrel.

Yes, but you will have to live with the magazine cap issue/nonissue.
