I've had several Remington 788 rifles since they came out back in the dark ages. 22-250, 308, and a 44 mag. All shot great, the latter two especially with lead. I just arranged to buy a friend's 788 30-30. He is having health issues and is trying to save his wife the irritation of dealing with his piles and piles of guns. We have been dickering over this for years and today he called and offered it to me at a very fair (to both of us) price. All he has put through it is lead.
I'm pumped. I have a bunch of 30 cal moulds from 120-200 grains. Sizing dies from .308-.312.
He promised me his load data.
Now, at almost 80, I'm excited again about rifle shooting. (next to my three trap leagues)

I'll be interested in what works in this rig. I have a Savage 340 in 30/30 that is currently in use by #1 Granddaughter. When she gets something bigger, I'd like to repo it for a lead plinker.

Good platform. Back in the 80's, Remington 788 .30-30's ruled the roost in CBA Production Class competition.

I just bought a Henry single shot for the express purpose of lead bullet shooting. A .30-30 seems like a very logical choice for that, along with my .45-70 Repro Highwall. There are others as well, but these two will be the focus at first.

I want to very carefully enter the bullet casting game, those two cartridges seem like a good starting point to me.

I have been a life-long fan of the .30-30, and really like your choice. Congrats on rediscovering rifle shooting.
