Yes. Even went through one of the checkpoints in the wall to go to the East German portion of Berlin.

In 1982 several of us wanted to visit the wall and go to Berlin but couldn't (we were in the Nuclear Surity program). Instead the unit arranged a bus tour to the point where East Germany, West Germany, and Czechoslovakia met.
Very eye opening what the Soviets were willing to do to their own people. Razor wire, shotgun mines, machine-gun towers, and patrols that had these wolfhound mix (very big and very nasty).
Pershing 1A. No city too big, no populated area too small. We even get the roaches.

Lived about a kilometer from it for 2 1/2 years, Aug. 1972 - January 1975. Part of it was in direct sight of our barracks window. ![[Linked Image from militaryuniformsupply.com]](https://militaryuniformsupply.com/cdn/shop/products/patch-berlincmd-mcam-26300_415x.jpg) Fwiw, that shoulder patch minus the Berlin banner is the same patch that Gen. Eisenhower wore as commander of SHAEF - Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force. Up until the re-unification of Germany, Berlin was officially an occupied city from WWII. If you don't count being surrounded by God only knows how many divisions of Soviets and East Germans, it was good duty and a pretty neat place for a 19 year old kid with a keen interest in WWII history.

The division of Germany and Berlin was done right after WWII. Stalin was instrumental in the whole thing. Considering that Stalin murdered 20 million Russians during his reign, this is nothing to him.

My next door neighbor's mother was born in 1947, in East Berlin. She and her parents managed to get out in 1954 and come to the United States. She hates the communists. She is a very intelligent and interesting person.

L.W. Had a neighbor lady like that. Was a young mom, stood up to the Communists. Was forced to learn Russian, some sort of translator, avoids admitting it. Said they would shout "Russki idi domu", Russians go home.
