Got a notice that we were late on a kids medical bill. My bad, paid it. The the lady said I was in collections for another 1200. I asked for what. She said my wife's bills.

News to me but whatever. I asked her why am I in collections if it's my wife's matter.

She said they go by addresses and since the house is in my name....

So my credit takes a hit just cuz she's in this house?

Is this legal?

I'll pay the bill but shouldn't they go after her? The kid I understand but a 50 yo woman...

Usually if you’re married her bills are your bills and vice versa.

Yep. Especially medical bills.

My brother bought a house back in 07 and lost it in 09 or 10 when he lost his job. He was single when he bought it…. Got married in 08….. they tried to go after his wife and they had a lawyer send a letter to the bank disputing the debt…. I guess by law they were supposed to prove she owed the debt by a certain date and they didn’t so as far as I know it never appeared on her credit? Just what I was told and different states probably have different laws?

Unless you are in a "community property" state, usually one spouse is not liable for the other spouses debts. Apparently in Alaska, there is something called a "community property agreement" that could affect this.

I guess what pisses me off the most is that collections didn't address it to me. I don't open her mail. Only way I found out was when I dropped the ball on my kids bill. If that didn't happen, they eventually would have served me papers. Then I would have been really pissed.

Told them to send me a breakdown on charges...addressed to me, and we will take care of it. Also lit into my wife about not telling me.

I just didn't know if this was legal since I have no access to her medical/billing.
