So far a fruitless search for an affordable hunting gun, Model 64. Lots of over priced guns that sit on the auction sites for months and months. But I did find a Model 64A. Other than the freckled receivers common of Winchesters of the 1970s, how do they compare to the original 1933-1954 guns?

My 64A is in 30/30 Ackley improved. Have used it for years. The bluing on the receiver is freckled and the stock is beat up. Still works of course. It is not a pre war model 64 by any stretch

As for 64 vs 64A, one difference I notice is the pistol grip is straighter on the 64A. The other differences are the typical pre vs post 64 manufacturing differences i.e. receiver alloy, contour, fit & finish etc.

WStrayer I too have been looking for one of these. Either .30 WCF or .32 Winchester Special in good working order would do me just fine. Its tough these days due to the renewed interest in lever action rifles. Good luck in your search.
Like you I cannot see dropping close to 1k for an occasional use deer rifle.
