Pretty happy with the way it turned out, such an improvement over the factory finish. What ever they use, hides the beauty of the color and grain .

Thanks. No sandpaper, just a stripper, then a lacquer thinner bath, and 4 coats of tru-oil.

Man, that looks nice!

By the time that gun was made factories had switched to conversion varnishes with some clinging to lacquer. Both can be (and were) tinted to create uniform finishes with a wide variety of stock woods. The "before" pics sure look like that. In an instance like this there's no recourse but to strip it and re-finish, if honestly acquired wear and family history isn't desired.
