Neither a borrower nor a lender be.

Early in married life, we borrowed $100 from bride's parents. They were surprised when they were repaid the next week. We borrowed $400 from my parents for an unexpected car repair. They were reimbursed within a month. Any other loans we took out were through banks, credit unions & etc and ALL have been paid back on time or before.

We "loaned" money to both our kids to help them buy vehicles with the "promise" they would pay us back over the course of a flexible time frame with no interest. Never saw a nickle from either one. Didn't press it either. But still have a sour taste in my mouth.

Obviously, we are still kicking, so the kid deals didn't bankrupt us. I was told a long time ago to not loan money to anybody you cannot do without if it is not paid back. And, don't borrow money from anybody YOU cannot pay back.

Don't do money with friends.

I'll pay, you can pay or we'll split it up, but I'm not lending and I'm not asking you to lend.

We do, but I doubt it would ever be needed.

The problem with loaning cars and trucks is that you are liable for accidents. Suppose that hey kill someone while under the influence and you get sued for millions. Your loan could be pretty expensive for you.

Same thing if the loan is a hammer.

Hard to be in business without some losses.

If I loan it, I don't expect it back...therefore rarely I loan money.

Don't have much I don't need or want. If I loaned it then I wouldn't have it when I need it. You want a loan go to the bank they are used to getting fugged in the butt.

Best answer by far. Just be pleasant and direct. Keep emotion (good or bad) OUT of the discussion. Don’t waffle or apologize for asking. If this is not possible, then you made a terrible mistake doing the deal.

A friend would be letting you know where he stands on the issue. I hate owing people money.

That’s my philosophy. I never loan money. I’ll give it, but never expect it back. I’m not worried about the money, but if you promised to pay me back and don’t, you’ve lied to me. That eats at me something fierce.
