Im taking my granddaughter to RSA for plains game next summer. The biggest game I anticipate is Kudu and Zebra She’s going to be shooting a .308 Tikka T3X youth model that I’ve had the barrel cut to 18” w/ a Banish 30 suppressor. I’m in the early stages of working up a load, and just returned from the range.
She’s 5’2”. With 130G TTSX I’m seeing average velocity of 2939fps ES 25.6 and SD of 15.0 for a 10 shot group .
With 168TTSX I’m seeing average velocity of 2480fps, ES of 20.1 and SD of 8.2 for a 10 shot group.
Anticipate shot being under 200 yards. Is 130G enough, or would you shoot the 168G? So far, they are pretty mild loads, but i was expecting a little more velocity than 2480 out of the 168G.
I had good luck with Federal Terminal Ascent bullets last year in Zimbabwe, but the factory loads in .308 are 175G which is even slower. Suggestions?
Jeff

My wife Eileen has taken a variety of Norther American and African big game using the .308 Winchester with either the 130-grain Barnes TTSX at 2850 fps or the 150-grain Nosler E-Tip (which in my experience performs very similarly to the TTSX) at the same velocity. The animals have ranged up to zebra, kudu and elk in size, and both have penetrated plenty and killed quickly.

Ime shots in RSA are not far. You should have plenty of velocity and penetration with the Barnes. Take your pick between the 130, 150, or 165-168 whichever your daughter is comfortable with.
I am continually astounded at how quickly people make up their minds on little evidence or none at all. Jack O'Connor

Sounds like the 130G TTSX sould work fine. I’ll continue refining the load. Any suggestions for powder? TAC?.
