Finds a deal once in a while.

My Son called last week, and asked if I was interested in buying some rifles from his work buddy. My safe is a bit crowded with several under used specimens already, so I said "probably not".

Then he started talking a bit more.
1 A 700 BDL in 7RM w/ a Nikon 3-9x40 in Redfield windage adjustable mounts....serial A6768XXX. Should be 1975?
The jeweling is not even worn off the bolt.

2 A Remington 722 in 257 w/ a Weaver 3-9x40 in Weaver pull over rings.

3 A 96 Mauser in 6.5x55 in a synthetic stock with a 1979 era Redfield 3-9 widefield accutrac. (stadia wires and trajectory compensation) Plus ammo, brass, and dies for the 6.5x55. I had the same Redfield on a Wea mk V in 22-250 about forty five years ago. I bought this one just for nostalgia.

$1000 even for the whole package.

I have grandkids still needing a deer rifle. The latter two will fit the bill well. And hell, I can easily consider them free to me.

The guy also had a LH Rem 788 in 6mm with a Leopold 3-9x40 for another $300. My son bought it for his LH 12 year old boy.

Back to the loading bench I go. I hope they all like H4831. I found a deal last fall and bought six pounds.

Time for an update.

The old 96 action binds terribly. It is probably a write off. But I really wanted the 3-9 wideview accu-trac from it anyway.

The 700 in 7 RM looks nearly new. The barrel is pitted a bit, but the lands are fresh. As soon as I finish working up loads for it, it will go to live in the Son in Law's safe.

The real jewel of the three turns out to be that 722 in 257. It turns out to be a 722B with upgraded walnut and checkering.

From what I can tell, the 722 bdl was made for three years. About the same time I was born.

Someone has smeared some kind of varnish all over the stock. The checkering now looks to be pressed rather than cut. I spent several hours today scrubbing spilled varnish from the metal. It finally all came off.

No alligator skin in the throat. The lands are 90% plus. There are a few small pits down through the bore, but I doubt they will be problematic.

What can a guy ask from a 70 year old working rifle?

I got the bore cleaned up and dosed it with UBC.

I finished it up by mounting the above mentioned Redfield wideview 3-9 accutrac. A 70s scope on a 50s rifle. A match made in heaven.

Even if I torch the 6.5x55, I came out rosey on this deal.
