I hate goatheads. I figured you folks sprayed that crap. One of the few weeds I'll actually consider using "harsh chemicals" on if there's anything approaching an infestation.

Oh, we spray them. I think the seeds blow off the hay trucks that go by. Or they are getting transported by critters from down by the river.
Somehow, they keep coming back

Supposedly them bastards can last decades in the soil.

Another nice goody from our "friends" in Russia or Europe.

Russian thistle, Russian olive, Tree of Heaven, Collared doves, etc etc.

Wonder what we gave them? Besides foreign aid and weapons.

Our wildlife biology friend hates them.

Great for windbreaks, decent shade, I think they smell OK during flowering, as I recall the honey from them is not bad. I was thinking when I lived on the Palouse of getting some large sections from trees and seeing what I might make from the wood. I think somewhere in my travels I may have seen some revolver stocks made from it and they looked half decent.

From a biological standpoint though.......................it's a pain in the ass.

Maybe not as bad as salt cedar/tamarisk.............but not good either.

As you said, it comes back because critters carry it back in., someone drives through a patch and then comes down your street and the seed heads open next to your driveway.

If nuclear radiation would work I'm about ready to try it around town. Too many folks there don't do anything about it alongside their buildings, the right of ways and such.

Well...one BLM range biologist loved Russian Olive.


He loved the fact that RO was a great transporter of water and nutrients.

Basically, when range management went to hell through overgrazing RO was there to save the day and help fix the soil.

We're getting off topic here, but then again this is the Hunter's Campfire (Boomerland in other words)

It seems in small numbers it's probably good, but in certain locations it can deplete ground water by using too much. Similar to what's happening here with our over abundance of junipers.

Goatheads were responsible for many kids pushing their bike home. Before puncture proof tires. I hate those things. Kilzall works! We dig them and pour vinegar on the broken roots. Seems to work.

They are easy to kill.
Just gotta get them before the seed (evil thorny foot killer) develops. Problem is, there is always more.....
