Need help identifying a folding rear sight removed from a 99 chambered in 284 either an F or M no barrel boss the rifle had double diamond checkering that should pinpoint year.
No Markings on the sight
Thanks Chris
What you have done is not nearly as important as how you have done it!!! The Old Fart 2008 A.D.
Stroebel says white triangle, but I have a 16B I bought new a few years ago, and it has a diamond. So perhaps Lyman changed it at some point or made both styles.
Well, Savage being Savage, they used every fold down sight made for a period there. I have no idea who made the unmarked sight. Some have a Marbles and others the Lyman, and then the unmarked one. I suspect they had a contract to make the unmarked ones and then gave up on it and just bought off-the-shelf stock.
Numrich sold the unmarked sight years back but they ran out quick. I bought a bunch of them.
The 284's had a thicker barrel and didn't have the sight boss
wyo1895 With Savage never say never. For a copy of my book on engraved Savage lever actions rifles send a check for $80 to; David Royal, p.o. box 1271, Pinedale, Wy., 82941. I will sign and inscribe the book for you. [email protected]
I agree with Jaaack, Lyma 14. The Double Diamond Fs and DLs date to 1964. Would have left the factory with the long fold-down sight, not the sight in your pic. Attached are 2 pics, one on a 1980 99-375, the other one marked LYMAN on the back is a pic I had from ebay.
I have pics of 3 284s: 2 99Fs, one with cut checking 1073942, the other double-diamond 1075228, both with the long fold-down. 1 pic of a DL dbl-diamond, 1084820, has long fold-down.
