Thought is that somebody removed part of the serial number, or all of it and restamped it.
Look at the forearm is your best best. If it's a really early 1899, the serial number could also be stamped on the rear of the bolt - but have to remove buttstock to see that.

There are no known serial numbers below about 3200. What is the barrel address, is there an M or JM in a circle on the bottom of the barrel, what does the bolt look like? Square or rounded where the bolt meets the back of the receiver, hole in the top of the bolt or rectangular popup cocking indicator? pictures would really help.

I asked the shop to check the forestock #. The butt has been cut. Just waiting now for an answer. Probably a miss stamp. I have a 95 so doesn't appear to be it.

OK got a call back from the shop The number on the forestock is the same as the receiver 811. No such serial number exists from what was saved of the old records that I read about. Guess I'll have to add it to the pack for that reason

That's... bizarre.
Pictures. Need pictures. And there's no letters in the serial number? Like AS811?

1899's that early are always cool. Does it have an 1895 style forearm, or the 1899 straight bottom forearm? Both show up on those early rifles.
