My Cold Steel Blackthorn cane came in!

Seems be very sturdy. It's poly instead of real Blackthorn.

It's 39" long. Seems about right for not having to lean forward while walking.

If needed for self preservation, it should make an very nice "whacker".

Do you need a cane for walking or do you just want something to carry? If it's just to carry forget a cane and get a walking stick, that gives you another 2' of range.

A classic hook handled cane made of oak or hickory is about the best choice for most people.

They are covered as protected ambulatory devices under the Americans With Disabilities Act whereas Blackthorn-style knob ended canes are not. Further, the classic hook handled wooden cane is on the TSA list of approved devices. If anyone challenges you as to why you need the cane you have no obligation to provide them with any answer whatsoever as that would violate your rights to medical privacy under the HIPPA law.

Canemasters.com is a good resource. They used to sell a wallet-sized laminated card that contained the above information and more, so if challenged you could show the card. It had phone numbers for each relevant government office that was responsible for the above protections. They have tons of great information and they make beautiful and effective canes, though the more you customize them the higher the prices go.

Personally, I have a simple oak hook-handled cane or stock stick that I got at Rural King for $16. I cut it to length and put a few coats of polyurethane on it and keep it in my truck. Anywhere I go that I can't carry my CPL weapons, I take the cane. I used to live in AZ and carried an ASP retractable baton in those situations, but now here in Michigan I cannot carry the ASP so I turned to the cane. It's nice to have on a walking trail too and I like the hook handle much better than the knob handle like I had on a Blackthorn I got from Ireland.

They have a lot of good stuff on their site to explore and they also have some good videos on youtube with combat instructors demonstrating martial applications of these kinds of canes.

Here's an option from Rural King, but it looks like they are carrying Ash wood canes now. I bought mine in a Rural Cane store and it said it was oak, I imagine red oak. White oak would be better. Hickory would be best.

Finally, there is a guy on youtube who was an MP in the Marine Corps and is a longtime martial arts student and master. He has a lot of great cane defense videos that are worth checking out. im very rural.....stock cane and most times a hickory shovel handle in back of my pickup either broken off or new yet to be installed.....attracts no ones attention

I'm making one with an arched railroad spike as a handle on an oak dowel.

After using my Cold Steel Blackthorn cane some, I'm not sure about the round ball on the end for a handle.
It surely will make a good defensive "tool" but not as comfortable to walk with as a "handle" on a regular cane.
Looks like I'm going to have a "collection" of canes before long! Lots of options that way! (GRIN!)

That was my first guess, Virgil. I have a drugstore folding model, which is great for travel on planes and just to have in the car. But next time I'm in Intermountain Farmers, I'm going to look for one of those stock handler canes. I've always admired some of the canes I've seen at craft booths in the farmers' market. Closer look might be in order.

I still think a blade-style golf putter would be a great choice. Nice shape for a handle, steel shaft with rubber tip. Oh, and a mean sumbeach if you had to hit somebody.

I have one made from a piece of 1" diameter hardwood dowel rod. The tip is drilled out to hold a pound of bullet casting lead, and the head is a hollow brass horse collar hame filled with #8 shot and epoxy glue. It's like a "Bubba Stick" with a few improvements.
