8 Crane Water Pipeline Project in San Antonio, TX
March 7th, 2024 marks a significant milestone in TNT Crane & Rigging’s legacy, as we reflect on our pivotal role in a recent project in San Antonio, TX. Rewind to October 2023 when J7 Services, LLC entrusted TNT Crane with a critical task: providing crane support for a water pipeline project for Alliance Regional Water. This venture epitomized collaborative synergy in the construction realm, and we would like to thank all the contractors and professionals that were involved.

Contractor Ensemble and Roles Defined

+ General Contractor: Garney Companies, Inc.
+ Directional Drilling Contractor: Hardrock Infrastructure
+ Lift Coordination Contractor: J7 Services LLC
+ Crane Company: TNT Crane & Rigging

The project’s scope entailed installing a 36″ water pipeline beneath the Guadalupe River. This task encompassed horizontally drilling 1,579 feet at a diameter of 54″. The coordination of the lift and pull through required utilization of eight hydraulic all-terrain cranes, five track hoes, and three loaders. Choosing the right equipment for the task and then employing a great team of professionals to execute the work safely would deliver a successful project completion.

The standard methods of inserting pipe into a Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) hole are typically reliant on equipment like pipe rollers, stands, and side booms. However, in the case of this project, the unique angle of the drill made these conventional methods impractical. This posed a formidable challenge for many organizations, but the contractors rose to the occasion.

The specific angle of the drill necessitated a departure from traditional techniques. To accommodate this, the pipe had to be elevated to a height of 35 feet above the ground. Moreover, it had to be supported at eight critical points along its length to conform to its natural curvature. This meticulous approach was essential to ensure that the pipe could smoothly glide into the hole without encountering any obstructions.

A project of this scope would include some challenges. Weather served as a difficulty on the project, due to heavy rain leading up to the project. The weather allowed us a tight window of opportunity to complete the job safely. This time constraint provides challenges in scheduling, mobilization, and setup of equipment. With a large inventory of mobile cranes located throughout the state of Texas, TNT Crane & Rigging swiftly mobilized resources from San Antonio, backed by support from our branches in Corpus Christi, Austin, Dallas, and Houston to make sure we were ready to go once the weather outlook cleared and the window was available. This project certainly highlights our dedication to providing an unparalleled delivery of crane rental services.

As we continue to grow, serving diverse sectors including civil construction, telecommunications, and power generation, our resolve remains unyielding: there is no project too daunting, no challenge insurmountable.

In the annals of TNT Crane & Rigging’s illustrious journey, March 7th, 2024, shall forever stand as a beacon of excellence—a testament to our unwavering commitment to elevating industry standards and delivering value to our customers and communities. Thank you to our team members on the ground, in the seats, and beyond for your hard work on this mission.
