Just as the Space Shuttle can land perfectly well without any engine at all, the ship's loss of power did not deprive it of forward energy. It continued on its merry way quite happily and would have passed harmlessly under the bridge for some distance - if it had not turned directly into the bridge. What/who caused that turn?
