Howdy, all...
Finally got my tax return, and paid for my namesake rifle, and a Weaver V3. I'm looking for good load suggestions for deer and elk. I kind of prefer the idea of finding one load that will work for both animals. Any pet load information would be appreciated.
Happy Shootin"... As a former .358 owner, I think I'd go for something like the 250 gr. Swift-A-Frame over an appropriate charge of something like H335. I would stay away from almost all the 200-225 gr. bullets for that job. Almost all of them are designed for .35 Remington speeds. Exceptions would be the Nosler Partition, and the Barnes X. Another bullet that has been known to work very well is the Speer 250 spt. That bullet is made with an .049 jacket, and is designed for the .35 caliber magnums. It apparently doesn't open real well on deer class stuff, but it does work. E

Eremicus,
Thanks for the info, I've been thinking something along the lines of a 225 Partition, as it seems like a good compromise between higher sectional density, and slightly flatter trajectory. From all reports, about any Partition should open fast enough for deer, and still have enough weight left to keep going in elk.
Mac

blr358,
I don't have any loading data for you but since I shoot a 35 Whelen, I can comment on 35 caliber bullets. In the 358, the 225's might be the best choice. To set the record straight, most of the 180 to 225 grain bullets are not designed for the 35 Remington.
180 to 225 grain 35 cal bullets:
Remington loads their 200 grain spitzer Core-Lokt in the 35 Whelen and the 350 RP magnum factory ammo, so it would do just fine in the 358. They have also loaded a 150 grain and 200 grain RN Core-Lokt in the 35 Remington.
Winchester used to load their 200 grain Silver Tip in the 358 factory stuff, so if you could find some, they would also be fine. They also offered a Power-Point and a Silver Tip, both in 200 grains, in the 35 Rem. I am assuming these were of the RN variety.
Hornady lists three bullets under 250 grains. A 180 SPT, 200 SPT, and 200 RN. Their 3rd edition book puts these in the medium or medium heavy game catagory. Also, these bullets are listed as being useable up to 2800/2900 fps. More than sufficient for any 358 Win load.
Speer has a four 35 cal bullets, among them a 180 FP and a 220 FP. In the reloading book, they recommend, in the 358, the 180 for deer and the 220 as a general purpose elk load. Once again, they would do just fine in the 358 Win.
Nosler lists four bullets also, with two of them coming in at 225 grains. The 225 Balistic tips would make excellent deer bullets. I have used these in my Whelen, and after shooting them into dirt banks at 100 meters, they come out weighing 165-170 grains and mushroomed well. Thats pretty good performance. The other 225 is the Partition and would be good for any big game.
Barnes makes three light bullets in 35 cal; 180, 200, and 225 grainers. They are all X-bullets and are suitable big game at 358 velocities.
Sierra offers a 225 grain GameKing spitzer and a Pro-Hunter 200 RN. I am sure the 225 would be a fine deer bullet in the 358.
And lastly, Swift offers a 225 grain A-Frame spitzer, although they are a bit spendy. Usually half again as much as the Partition. This bullet will easily take the velocity of the 358.
So there you have it. This list does not include any of the custom bullet makers and there are at least a couple more dozen 35 cal bullets availabe from them. Looking at the list above, the only ones I would consider to be "35 Remington" bullets would be the round nose Core-Lokts, Power-Points, and Silver Tips; the RN Hornadys; and the Sierra 200 Pro-Hunter. The rest of em' would be great choices for big game in the 358. That leaves some 13 bullets (you may have trouble finding some of the old WW pointed Silvertips though) in 180 to 225 grains that would work fine in your 358. And the 250 grainers are no slouches either.
Long live the thirty-five! [Linked Image]
Larry L

You see in this world, there's two kinds of people my friend; those with loaded guns, and those who dig. You dig.
