Our ring was 1 long and 1 short. There were 4 or 5 others on the line.

Oh yeah. The first telephone central office I worked in also still had at least on Manual line, one that appeared on the switchboard and for which calls had to be dialed by an operator. For a while as the popularity of party lines dropped, there were a lot of customers that had essentially private lines because no one was bridged with them. Eventually, the assignment ladies got around to sifting through those and reassigning them so they were sharing a line again. At some point, we stopped offering party lines although I don’t recall anyone being forced to give them up, which may have required PSC approval.

Years later we began offering distinctive rings on private lines, multiple numbers each with its own ring pattern so people living together could share a line and know a call was for them by its ring.

We were on one when I was a kid. Rural area near Addy, WA. There was three or four homes on the line.

Back then, I don't think kids used the phone much at all, I sure didn't anyways. I guess I haven't changed much.

Back around 1976, We were living on a ranch near Martinsdale, MT. There was no telephone at all out on the ranch.

If someone needed to make a phone call, they would drive in to Matinsdale, and use a pay phone booth there.
